This role supports a Strategic Impact Fund project called “Unlocking Access to Butetown’s Cultural Past by Creating New Guides and Learning Resources”. This project seeks to open up access to Butetown’s past, and advance knowledge and appreciation of Black and Minority Ethnic cultural heritage and history in Wales, for young people, teachers, and the wider community.
Specific duties as part of this project:
1. To collaborate with the Glamorgan Archives to append the research guide.
2. To undertake research by collating, annotating, indexing and editing additional materials for the Glamorgan Archives’ 2024 free, online Research Guide to Sources for the Study of Minority Ethnic History.
3. To organise and collate: 1) 2023 student-led research project findings on media and materials on life in the area; 2) missing archival materials held elsewhere (e.g., film, photos, oral histories); 3) secondary literature, annotating as needed.
4. To contact academics and organisations working on the area to identify and fill gaps in the guide, with support from the PI, Co-I, and community partners.
5. To develop and add an engagement and impact monitoring tool to the Research Guide to track and respond to users’ needs and interests, following research ethics processes and standard operating procedures.
6. Actively participate within the project group, communicating and presenting research at meetings, through publications and other recognised avenues as appropriate, ensuring information is communicated to internal and external partners.
7. To contribute and support research publications and presentations as required.
8. To maintain and update area of specialist knowledge, researching and critically appraising relevant literature within the area.
9. To abide by the University policies on Health and Safety and Equality and Diversity.
10. Any other duties not included above, but consistent with the role.
Person Specification
Qualifications and Education:
- Working towards a degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
- Knowledge of research methods and techniques within specialist field (e.g., media history, community history, Black and Minority Ethnic history in Wales and the UK).
- Proven ability to analyse complex information and summarise appropriately.
- Proven ability to organise and present materials to a polished and publishable standard.
- Proven communication skills, including presentation to various audiences.
- Excellent organisational and team-working skills.
Other:
- Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and teamwork within work.
Desirable Criteria:
- Working towards a Postgraduate degree at PhD level (or nearing completion / submission) in a related subject area or relevant industrial experience.
- Relevant professional qualification(s) – degrees in history, media studies, museum and heritage studies, or other relevant subject area (please explain relevance).
- Evidence of collaborations with community organisations and archives.
- Proven ability to work without close supervision.
- Proven ability to adapt to the changing requirements of the Higher Education community.
