Job Description
Professional Duties of a Teacher (Northern Ireland) 1987
1. General Professional Duties: A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require.
2. Planning:
1. Planning and preparing courses and lessons;
2. Teaching according to the educational needs of the pupils assigned;
3. Assessing, recording, and reporting on the development, progress, and attainment of pupils.
3. General Responsibilities:
1. Promoting the general progress and well-being of individual pupils;
2. Providing advice and guidance to pupils on educational and social matters;
3. Communicating and consulting with parents of pupils;
4. Participating in meetings related to the curriculum.
4. Assessment/Reporting: Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports, and references relating to individual pupils.
5. Professional Development:
1. Participating in any scheme of staff development;
2. Reviewing teaching methods and participating in further training.
6. Discipline/Health and Safety: Maintaining good order and discipline among pupils.
7. Public Examinations: Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations.
8. Management Activities/Administration:
1. Contributing to the selection and professional development of other teachers;
2. Participating in administrative tasks related to curriculum and organization.
9. Number of Days/Hours of Work:
1. A full-time teacher shall be available for work on 195 days in any year;
2. A teacher may not be required to teach for more than specified hours per week.
10. Staff Cover: Supervising and teaching any pupils whose teacher is not available.
