DUTIES:
1. Researching issues affecting growth and development in the community.
2. Recommending land use policy to promote efficient and effective land use patterns and complete neighbourhoods.
3. Researching and preparing reports with recommendations as part of planning studies to the Development and Heritage Standing Committee, Committees of Council, and City Council.
4. Facilitating public consultation, liaising with stakeholders, and undertaking community outreach.
5. Researching and preparing reports related to Official Plan amendments, Community Improvement Plans, heritage planning, and special studies.
6. Conducting statistical analysis and preparing projections on demographics and land use requirements.
7. Assisting with the coordination of databases regarding land use patterns, population, and economic resources.
8. Conducting studies on physical, social, and environmental conditions including those that promote walkable, strong neighbourhoods and active transportation.
9. Conducting studies and developing policies related to local economic development.
10. Reviewing and providing recommendations on policy initiatives proposed by senior levels of government.
11. Providing expert evidence at hearings of the Ontario Land Tribunal and other tribunals.
12. Providing advice to public agencies, community/neighbourhood associations, the general public, and internal service units of the Corporation regarding the key responsibilities of the Planning Department and answering public inquiries.
13. Performing Occupational Health & Safety duties as outlined in the Corporation’s Health and Safety Program.
14. Performing other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Must have a University degree in Planning or related field or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency and a minimum of four (4) years experience in planning or related field.
2. Must be a full Member of the Canadian Institute of Planners (MCIP) or must be able to attain full membership within three (3) years of accepting the position.
3. Must have the ability to travel to off-site locations in a timely and expedient manner as required. If the method of travel is by vehicle, a current valid and lawful Driver's Licence is required in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act and must provide a driver’s abstract as a condition of employment.
4. Must have knowledge of the Planning Act and Ontario Heritage Act, related legislation, provincial policies, development review, and Official Plan amendment processes.
5. Must have excellent verbal, written, and visual communication skills; ability to make oral presentations; ability to develop and use graphic aids.
6. Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft suite of products, graphic software, and land-based information systems; proficiency in ArcGIS is desirable.
7. Must have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
8. Must have the ability to solve problems and meet deadlines under pressure.
9. Should have knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, its regulations, and knowledge of the hazards associated with work.
10. The physical demands analysis associated with this job indicates a sedentary level of work.
