Job Summary
What you’ll do…
You will support delivering the district’s civil engineering programme by planning, specifying, managing, and delivering (through external contractors) routine construction and maintenance. You will inspect and maintain civil engineering assets including bridges, reservoirs dams and forest roads. You will collaborate, engage, advise, and work with internal stakeholders to deliver civil engineering works, whilst meeting legal, health and safety, environmental and policy obligations.

Where you’ll work…
You will be based at one of our offices at the Cannock Chase, Matlock Moor, Sherwood Pines, Market Rasen or Fineshade, all within the Central District.
Central England Forest District Team manages 30,000ha of the Nations Forests within a triangle formed by Preston, Grimsby and Milton Keynes. We manage a diverse range of forests from ancient oak-wood to new community forests, producing 150,000 tonnes of timber every year and providing homes for a wide range of wildlife. Over 8 million people live within 20 miles of our forests, giving rise to a diverse range of customers, neighbours and stakeholders. We manage seven visitor centres, attracting over 2.5 million visits per year, and 23,000 hectares of accessible woodlands.
Job Description
* Champion a safe working environment and be a role model for high standards of health and safety by effectively managing staff and contractors working on Forestry England land.
* Plan and deliver a programme of civil engineering works across the district. Build effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to develop project scopes and associated costings.
* Procure routine civil engineering works using existing frameworks or other established procedures.
* You will be a contract manager, including developing and administering contracts.
* Have pre-commencement meetings with contractors, meeting Forestry England’s policies and procedures.
* Review or prepare risk assessments, method statements and other health and safety documents for projects, so they comply with specification, environmental and health & safety standards.
* Regularly monitor and record contractor health and safety and environmental performance; proactively manage H&S and environmental issues; promptly report accidents and near misses and make sure that lessons learned are shared and implemented.
* Support the senior/principal civil engineer with the planning, designing, and delivering higher-risk and more complex projects.
* Line manages, mentor and support civil engineering works supervisors and machine operators.
* Create minor designs meeting Forestry England and industry standards.
* Monitor, record and manage carbon emissions. Share and implement best practice to help achieve Forestry England’s net zero targets.
* When you are trained and experienced, inspect assets to assess and report on their condition. Keep asset records up to date.
* Use Forester Web to produce contract maps and update civil engineering asset data.
And any other tasks, reasonably requested by your line manager.
Person specification
Essential Professional And Technical Experience
* Experience working in a civil engineering role, including works planning, design, or contract supervision.
* Experience in working as part of an effective team and with internal and external stakeholders.
* Experienced in designing and safely delivering civil engineering construction projects, including a good understanding of the construction design and management regulations and other applicable health and safety legislation.
* Competent IT user with experience in MS Office suite of applications.
* Clear and confident spoken and written communications skills.
Desirable Professional And Technical Experience
* Civil engineering experience in a forestry or rural environment and applying ecologically sensitive best practice.
* Experience using GIS software or other mapping systems.
* Experience of using computer aided design software, such as AutoCAD or Civils 3D.
* Experience in the quarrying/extractives industry, and applying the Quarries Regulations.
Qualifications
Essential
* 3 A levels.
* HNC/HND in Civil Engineering.
Desirable
* CITB Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme or IOSH Managing Safely qualification.
