A Test and Commissioning Engineer vacancy exists within the Road & Rail Traffic Control Systems team. You will report functionally to the Principal Engineering Leader for T&C and for day-to-day works to your designated Delivery Manager. You will have proven relevant experience & the technical knowledge required to plan and undertake testing activities to bring infrastructure into use with new rolling stock.
The assignments for this role will be to test and commission both new signalling introduction on 4LM and the Infrastructure alterations currently being undertaken on the Piccadilly line Upgrade programme in time for the new longer Piccadilly line trains to arrive in 2024/25. New infrastructure involved will include new CBTC signalling, legacy signals, train information download systems, platform CCTV, radio, platform humps, new depot and sidings, and all the trackside infrastructure relating to a change in train stopping position. You will be expected to work on other programmes and projects across the TfL group as and when other assignments arise in the future.
You will apply your expertise in planning test train movements and the testing of wayside infrastructure across a range of projects and programmes, including maintenance support, renewals, enhancements, and upgrades. You will apply a risk-based approach through all life-cycle phases in all areas of the discipline. There will be antisocial hours working required both on nights and weekends. You should have the flexibility and ability to travel anywhere in London to where the testing is taking place.
Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Experience
1. Knowledge of depot operations and rolling stock maintenance/systems/operation/practices.
2. Thorough understanding of the fundamentals of writing safe systems of work.
3. Knowledge of LU rulebook and working arrangements to make trains available for testing in engineering hours and possessions/closures.
4. Knowledge of the Infrastructure systems that enable a train to stop safely every day on platforms and in sidings and depot areas.
5. Ability to communicate and develop test plans and engage and influence stakeholders.
6. Ability to identify, plan, and evaluate options, including cost and timescale implications.
7. Ability to work collaboratively with other members of the team.
8. Ability to problem solve in potentially business-critical situations.
9. Ability to work independently on the operational railway and gain the licenses to supervise others when undertaking testing.
10. Good understanding of the fundamentals of writing safe systems of work for doing trackside tests with the new trains.
11. Delivery of projects through the complete life cycle, from concept to operational service.
12. Knowledge of TfL assurance and pathway products associated with testing and bringing assets into use.
