About the Opportunity: We are looking to recruit a Materials Testing Consultant at our Birchwood laboratory facilities (ISO 17025 accredited) who has knowledge and experience of mechanical testing and the mindset to develop new test methods/programmes. Our customers come from a wide range of industries, predominantly from the nuclear and conventional power generation sectors, but also aerospace and automotive. The successful candidate will join the Materials Science and Structural Integrity (MSSI) team with duties including: - Carry out mechanical and bespoke testing in a laboratory environment with excellent record keeping and an emphasis on high levels of quality assurance. - Analysis and interpretation of test results, including writing reports. - Interfacing with customers to ensure that their needs are satisfied and identifying opportunities for future business. - Interfacing with other internal departments to ensure equipment maintained and operated in line with currently HSE regulations and industry best practice. We are seeking candidates with: A Degree level qualification or equivalent experience in materials, mechanical engineering, or physical sciences or 5 years' experience working in a mechanical testing facility or similar with a proven track record of delivering high quality test data. With some of the following skills and experience: - The successful candidate will have good practical engineering understanding and experience of working in an engineering laboratory environment to strict quality assurance requirements and following appropriate codes and standards. - Some experience working with high pressure high temperature water systems and high-pressure gases would be advantageous, but not critical. - Experience of successfully delivering mechanical testing results and in particular, experience in fatigue and fracture theory would be a distinct advantage. - Good understanding of safe working practices in a laboratory environment. - Good appreciation of quality control systems adopted in mechanical testing laboratories. - Experienced with the analysis and presentation of mechanical testing data. - The ability to utilise practical skills and knowledge and to fault find and solve issues. - Familiarity or knowledge of programming languages used typically in scientific analysis (for example, python) would be beneficial.
