National Highways have an excellent opportunity for a Net Zero Senior Advisor to join our Environmental Sustainability Division within Safety, Engineering and Standards (SES). The Net Zero Senior Advisor will, working across the company, develop and implement decarbonisation policies, standards, and best practices. The Senior Advisor will provide specialist technical advice and guidance, acting as the focal point to ensure alignment between development, renewal and maintenance of National Highways assets and the Environmental and Sustainability Strategy.
Please note this is a hybrid position and can be based from any of our UK offices; however, travel to Birmingham to attend team meetings will be required.
1. Provide specialist subject matter expertise on carbon, particularly in the areas of construction and maintenance, innovation and decarbonisation pathways.
2. Provide technical assurance of carbon submissions and data, ensuring National Highways are establishing, implementing and delivering actions to achieve the construction and maintenance of performance metric.
3. Represent National Highways on net zero related technical and standards committees, steering groups, conferences, seminars and workshops. Contribute to the development of external standards, to ensure that National Highways views are appropriately represented.
4. Develop technical solutions and communicate to stakeholders to support implementation and manage external expert and consultancy support, evaluating and acting on such advice to ensure objectives are achieved.
5. Ensure internal and external stakeholders' engagement to understand business needs, promoting and gaining commitment to Net Zero objectives and solutions, identifying key areas for improvement and sharing best practices. Key areas of engagement comprise of low carbon materials, innovation, asset resilience, carbon data and assurance.
About you.
1. A chartered engineer and/or environmental specialist with a relevant professional institution (e.g. ICE, CIWEM, CIEEM, IEMA) or hold equivalent recognition of your technical suitability for the role (willingness to work towards achievement of a professional accreditation in the near future will also be considered).
2. Good collaboration skills with ability to gain the involvement and engagement of a wide range of stakeholders.
3. Good communication skills, including presentations and numerical analytical skills, including the use of Excel and other tools.
4. Experience of delivering or managing projects.
5. Experience and application of expertise in the following areas: knowledge of legislation and policy influencing carbon reduction and climate change mitigation & resilience / the principles of sustainable asset management and its inclusion within policy, procedures and standards.
