This role is suited to an enthusiastic, innovative, confident Senior Design Engineer with proven 3D CAD Design experience, and a background of mechanical engineering working with small specialist components. A passion for manufacturing processes, tolerances and fits, together with an aptitude for reverse engineering within bespoke design, would help you fully immerse yourself in this role.
As part of the varied responsibilities, you will be creating and modifying detailed technical drawings and models of component parts of cinematography and photography equipment using CAD software. Collaborating with the different functions within the business to support cataloguing of the design of existing components, as well as optimising the development of new components to ensure functionality, performance, and manufacturability.
You will be heading up design reviews and providing technical expertise and recommendations to support development of new ranges as well as liaising with the Workshop to machine prototype parts and make necessary adjustments. You will also have the ability to produce technical drawings to allow outsourcing of machining.
To thrive in this role, you must have a calm and patient approach, ideally with experience of working with precision on specialist and delicate components. Attention to detail is paramount as well as the ability to work as a team and on your own initiative. In addition, you will be willing to participate in additional training and development activities required by TLS to support the development of your own skills and knowledge base.
Although not a necessity, a passion and general interest in photography, cinematography and the filming industry will allow you to immerse yourself in the company’s forward-thinking lens innovation.
Key Responsibilities:
* Creating and modifying 2D and 3D CAD models of lens components using AutoCAD software.
* Collaborating with Lens Servicing, Re-Housing and Workshop teams to translate design specifications into technical drawings and models.
* Converting 2D (AutoCAD LT) drawings into 3D, working through our existing parts.
* Generating detailed documentation, including drawings and specifications to support manufacturing and assembly processes.
* Designing the rehousing mechanics for cinematography lenses.
* Accurate measuring of original lens dimensions and movements.
* Disassembly of original mechanics down to optical cell.
* Measuring the movement of the cell(s) in relation to the film plane.
* Setting tolerances for the machining process.
* Producing drawings for the Workshop team to work and assembly drawings for technicians.
* Collaborating with function teams to support integration of components into units.
* Collaborating with Third Party manufacturers and suppliers to ensure successful external production of components as applicable.
* Ensuring compliance with industry standards, regulations, and best practices in our industry.
* Staying updated with the latest advancements in lens engineering technologies and industry trends.
Experience:
* 5+ years’ experience using 3D CAD software.
* 3+ years’ experience of working on CNC machines (milling and lathes) and an understanding of the capabilities of the machines.
* Experience of being an engineering drafter.
* HNC in mechanical engineering or similar beneficial.
* Strong mechanical engineering understanding with some experience with bench fitting.
* Experience with measuring and checking components, working to tolerances of 0.02mm.
* Experience of working within a precision engineering environment involving small component parts, ideally from an aerospace or similar industry.
* Understanding of the manufacturing processes and materials used in component production.
* Dealing with small mechanical components.
* Experience using micrometres, depth gauges, clocks and vernier callipers.
* Familiarity with industry standards and regulations related to component engineering.
