Job Description: Early Years Educator
Job Purpose
Working as part of the Education Team delivering an excellence of physical, creative, personal, emotional, social and intellectual education and Care for the children placed in the day nursery. We can offer career progression and support for own children.
Give support to the Senior members of staff and other staff within the nursery
To implement the daily routine in their particular unit
To promote the nursery to perspective newcomers
To maintain good levels of practice in the absence of senior staff
To ensure maximum coverage of security, when assigned the responsibility of opening and closing the nursery.
Other duties and responsibilities of a similar nature and at a similar responsibility level to those described above which may be allocated from time to time.
Performance criteria
To observe, supervise and support all Students and Trainees within the nursery in their day to day duties
To implement, the Early Years Foundation-Stage
To take on the role of a key worker by actively taking part in
Observe, assess and record progress of each child in, the key worker group
Plan and evaluate play to meet children’s needs and interests
Work with individuals and groups of children as appropriate to their development
Work in partnership with parents/Guardians
Work with the team to ensure a smooth transition from home to nursery and between rooms.
Draw on expertise of colleagues within the nursery and outside agencies to prepare plans for individual children
Display children's work to draw attention to and celebrate their achievements
To undertake regular accredited first aid training and to administer basic first aid.
To meet performance targets set by management.
To carry out job responsibilities with due regard to the equal opportunities policy.
To be a positive role model and set good examples
To maintain confidently at all time both in and out of the nursery environment
To take responsibility of the planning and monitoring of children’s learning opportunities ensuring you take into account children individual needs and to act as a key person.
To assist in the formulation and implementation of policies and procedures within the nursery and to have a sound understanding.
To foster the physical, social, emotional and intellectual development of all children attending the nursery, including those with special educational needs.
To maintain accurate and up to date records of children’s learning journeys and development books.
To support senior staff with the day to day running of the room.
Personal Management Responsibilities
Supporting trainee and students and supervising them accordingly.
Responsible for all administrative duties associated with management of the nursery e.g. maintaining records on children and their families, maintaining a register, staff dinners.
To support management team in monitoring staffing issues
To be responsible for the implementation of a fire drill procedure
To assist in the promotion of parent/guardians support and fund raising activities.
Help control and maintain various resources and records books, materials, equipment etc.
Undertake training to enable to set and follow best practices.
To attend monthly staff meetings outside of working hours alongside parents evening.
To ensure that all children/visitors are greeted in a professional and appropriate manner.
To adhere to the nursery’s health and safety policy.
To ensure that any problems concerning work or otherwise are addressed or reported to the appropriate person.
Report any concerns relating to a child to the appropriate person.
Team Working
Maintain professional working relationships with your colleges
Liaise with other professionals associated with the nursery.
Liaise and welcome all parents and guardians and family members.
Attend meetings with the directors of the nursery ensuring that they are kept informed of current activities at the nursery.
Address staff concerns and record appropriately
Offer support and assistance to staff/parents/guardians and children experiencing difficulties with behaviour.
Participate and support staff development though observations and feedback.
Support and liaise with all staff/trainees/students/volunteers and supervising them accordingly.
Complete allocated tasks by the senior staff and management
To support all member of the team within the nursery in their day to day duties.
To establish and maintain effective communication links with children, parents and other agencies.
Make training needs known to the nursery management team.
To undertake duties listed on group rotas.
In conjunction with other staff to undertake laundry and cleaning duties as required and to ensure that the nursery is kept clean and tidy e.g. wiping tables, changing nappies, cleaning of equipment and preparing food for the children etc.
To work in partnership with parents, including daily informal contact, curriculum events, celebrations of festivals, social events, parents evening etc.
Working with individuals and groups of children as appropriate to their development.
To organize trips and outings for the children.
Care Responsibilities
To assist the children with eating their food and reinforce the use of good manners.
To consult with the line manager regarding sick children and if required by the management, to accompany them to hospital in the absence of the parents and to remain with the child until a parent arrives.
To ensure that children are only released to authorized adults.
To foresee the needs of children with specific needs and give physical emotional, social and intellectual guidance as appropriate and support relevant paperwork.
To settle new children into the setting
To attend to the holistic needs of children for example changing clothes and nappies, feeding and toileting.
To implement and remove broken items or toys from the room as the appropriate time.
Making and repairing appropriate materials for play activities e.g. dolls house, dressing up, story props etc.
To be responsible for cooking and serving dinners to the children and to support formulating menus which take children’s preferences into account ensuring that a healthy balanced menu is provided.
To support the child protection co-ordinator within the nursery, ensuring that the policy and procedure are operated correctly at all times.
To be responsible for overseeing the medicine procedure at the nursery. Its implementation and ensuring medicine is signed for by the parent/guardian.
To help ensure a happy stimulating and safe environment both indoors and outdoors.
To formulate, implement and evaluate the behaviour management procedure in conjunction with the nursery manager/ behaviour co-ordinator.
To know at all time how many children are within the room.
To offer support or assistance to anyone who has a health and safety issue at the nursery.
To lead focus activities and complete relevant paper work
To comply with the rules, laws and regulations relating to the nursery.
To be involved in setting out equipment in an interesting and stimulating way before the activities of the day and clearing away equipment after use.
To ensure daily health and safety checks are completed and share responsibility for the health and safety of children and colleagues at all the times.
To be responsible for planning and organisation of own displays
To plan and carry out activities suitable to the age range and development level of the children within the nursery in conjunction with senior staff.
To carry the running of the room in the absence of the senior early years educator.
