Employer: Barts Health NHS Trust
Location: London
Salary: £105,504 - £139,882 p.a.
Closing date: 4th March 2025
If you are looking for:
1. A team of friendly, supportive and motivated consultants
2. A department that prioritises high quality patient care, training and education
3. Patients with a wide range of emergency and critical illnesses
4. An opportunity to develop sub-specialty interests
5. A fair work life balance
Then, consider joining our friendly, dynamic team based here at Newham University Hospital. We are looking to expand our team of 16 consultants (3 with PEM sub-specialty training) with more dual-trained consultants. We pride ourselves on a consultant-led and delivered service and believe this is key to excellence in Emergency Care. Professional well-being and supporting a sustainable work-life balance is a priority in the department.
Newham University Hospital sees over 90,000 Emergency patients per year, with another 75,000 seen in a co-located Urgent Care Centre. There are Same Day Emergency Care Units within both the Adult and Paediatric departments, as well as an Ambulatory Medicine Unit for suitable adult patients run by the Medical Team. Newham ED is a Trauma Unit with strong links to the Major Trauma Centre at the Royal London Hospital, which is also part of Barts Health.
Main duties of the job
Emergency Medicine: When on clinical shifts the appointee will cover all areas of the department, including resus and the children’s emergency department. Responsibilities include managing the shift as consultant in charge, reviewing patients and supporting and training junior members of staff, decisions to admit and safe discharge. Working with senior colleagues across all specialties to make management and referral decisions, and developing strong working relationships with all clinical staff.
Same Day Emergency Care: The emergency medicine consultants run an integrated SDEC unit at Newham, in conjunction with acute medicine. The unit covers a range of treatment chairs, assessment cubicles and short stay (overnight) beds. Patients are managed on ambulatory clinical pathways for all specialties. There is a separate SDEC unit for children, also managed by emergency medicine.
Front Door: All Consultants play a key role in actively reviewing all patients on arrival, supporting rapid diagnostics and treatment, as well as streaming and redirection to the most appropriate services. We aim to cover both walk-in patients and ambulance handover with a senior decision maker. This ensures maximal utilisation of partners in the urgent care network, Hospital Avoidance Teams and GP out of hours services.
