This is an exciting development opportunity for a registered nursewith experience of working on surgical wards to join our established team inthe Surgical Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit at Sunderland RoyalHospital.
SDEC is the provision of same day care for emergency surgicalpatients who would otherwise be admitted to hospital. Under this care model,patients presenting at hospital with surgical conditions can be rapidlyassessed, diagnosed and treated without being admitted to a ward, and ifclinically safe to do so, will go home the same day their care is provided.
As this is a development opportunity you will initially besupported by and work alongside two of our experienced Band 7 NursePractitioners with a robust competency framework. After this you will haveresponsibility for clerking and reviewing less complex patients in thedepartment. You will also assist with documenting on the ward rounds andcomplete SDEC documentation and referrals. Towards the end of this developmentopportunity you will work alongside one practitioner, clerking, reviewing,planning further care with the support of the Band 7 Nurse Practitioner.
Applicants must be NMC registered (Nursing), have a degreeand have completed (or currently completing) the clinical skills course. Youmust possess good communication and interpersonal skills and be able to workindependently and across disciplines as a member of the multi-disciplinaryteam.

Main duties of the job
Thepostholder will be responsible for:
* Responding promptly to calls/referrals fromcolleagues/external partners.
* Supporting the Surgical Nurse Practitionersto manage a defined caseload in the department.
* Reviewing and referring to the appropriateperson, i.e. Band 7 Nurse Practitioner, Surgical medical team etc.
* Supporting the Surgical Nurse Practitionersto assess, diagnose, and manage a variety of surgical conditionswithin the scope of your practice, working to defined protocols.
* Undertaking sensitive discussions withpatients, families and carers about their condition to ensure their activeinvolvement in the care and to obtain informed consent as required.
* Liaise with other colleagues in other areasof the hospital.
* Signposting, referring and communicating withother health and social care professionals.
* SDEC is open 7days a week 07:30-20:30 and you will be required to contribute to covering a 7day service.

Person Specification
Skills and Knowledge
* Awareness of national health and social care policy.

* Ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious information, where persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training, empathic or reassurance skills are required.

* Competent in the use of IT packages.
* Evidence of competency in relation to clinical practices appropriate to the post.
Experience
* Experience of care delivery.
* Experience of the specialist which would normally be gained through working as a Band 5.
* Experience of leading a team/supervising junior staff.

* Experience of coordinating care for a caseload of patients.
Physical Skills
* Ability to assist patients to move as per Trust Moving and Handling Policy.
* Able to travel across sites.
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse or Allied Health Professional.
* Degree in nursing studies or other relevant clinical degree or evidence of currently working towards this (UK equivalent).
* Mentorship certificate/Practice Assessor training or demonstrable equivalent experience.
* Clinical skills accreditation or currently undertaking course.
* Leadership and Management course.
* Qualification in specialty.
* Non-medical prescribing or willingness to complete.
