An exciting opportunity has arisen to apply for the post of Consultant in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery with a specialist interest in TMJ Surgery, based at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This is a replacement locum post and is a 10.0 PA job plan.
The successful candidate would be joining a busy Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Department which provides services to patients in Oxfordshire and on-call services to the wider Thames Valley. Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a dedicated Major Trauma Centre for the Thames Valley Trauma Network. The contract would be held with Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust but candidates may need to visit peripheral units for service needs.
The successful candidate would be expected to be involved in both general OMFS work and specialist TMJ work. The candidate is expected to contribute in the development of pathways for TMJ patients at local, regional, and national levels. The exclusive nature of the subspecialty interest reflects the commitment needed to this subspecialty in this job. They would be expected to join the 1 in 9 on-call rota.
The candidate must have full or temporary GMC registration and be on or within 3 months of eligibility for inclusion on the specialist list in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. However, later is a desired requirement.
The successful candidate will be expected to be part of the team delivering general OMFS services. They would also be expected to provide a general and specialist TMJ service for OMFS.
The postholder’s duties will be based mainly at John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, although there may be a requirement to visit other hospitals within the trust (Churchill Hospital, Oxford, Nuffield Centre for Orthopaedics, Oxford and Horton Hospital, Banbury) or to some of the other hospitals within the Thames Valley in Buckinghamshire, Berkshire or Wiltshire. It is a condition of the appointment that the postholder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations.
The postholder will be expected to actively participate in the supervision and training of Specialist Registrars, Foundation year doctors, Dental Core trainees, and Dental SHO’s. The postholder is expected to work with consultant colleagues to provide a comprehensive Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery service, achieving compliance with 18 weeks and other targets set by the Trusts and nationally.
The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, and quality improvement activities as required by the Trust.
He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients and the running of his/her clinical service under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate chair.
The post-holder will be required to participate in programmed teaching activities including training of junior dentists, doctors, nurses, and other professional staff within the Trust. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The post-holder’s contribution to teaching, training, and research will be included in the regular job plan review.
The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies. The post-holder will lead the safeguarding of high standards of care by participating in the creation of an environment in which excellence in clinical care will flourish.
The post-holder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trusts.
The post-holder is responsible for ensuring that all duties and responsibilities of this post are carried out in compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, Statutory Regulations, and Trust Policies and Procedures.
