The Point of Care Testing (POCT) department within Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS) provides and supports and governs near-patient pathology diagnostic testing conducted outside of the traditional central laboratory.
The BSPS POCT network includes Frimley Health (Frimley Park Hospital, Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals), The Royal Surrey County Hospital (Guildford), Ashford and St Peter's Hospital (Chertsey), The Royal Berkshire Hospital (Reading), East Surrey Hospital (Redhill) along with multiple and expanding projects within the community.
Our BSPS team have extensive experience of supporting a wide repertoire of tests and offer expertise to:
• Advise on potential solutions tailored to the clinical requirement.
• Assess the suitability of proposed testing environments.
• Perform comprehensive method evaluations to ensure acceptable analytical performance.
• Deliver initial training and re-certification, ensuring sufficient staff competency to ultimately benefit patient safety.
• Minimise service down-time, by performing maintenance procedures, providing technical support and troubleshooting.
• Provide formal documentation and perform audits.
• Ensure calibration, internal quality control and external quality control performance is maintained.

The post-holder will be an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and skilled individual, preferably with a background in pathology or POCT. They will assist in the provision of efficient, effective and reliable POCT laboratory services to users within the BSPS network. This includes:
• To maintain equipment as directed ensuring all protocols and quality standards are met
• Work in accordance with departmental policies and standard operating procedures, to maintain high standards of patient safety.
• Able to travel independently to any BSPS site.
• To ensure good stock control of consumables
• Maintain good communication within the POCT team in order to maximise efficiency through agreed priorities and to achieve the aims of POCT analysis on a daily basis
• In liaison with senior staff to ensure the department’s quality standards are maintained and to troubleshoot any areas failing to meet these standards
• Participate in the audit of quality control measures, to include departmental audits as necessary
• To participate in Internal Quality Control and other quality checks as necessary
• To participate in the provision of External Quality Assessment services both in house and to external customers
• Work with other members of the POCT Team to achieve and maintain accreditation against relevant ISO standards and comply with national POCT guidelines
