Associate Geotechnical Engineer Offshore Wind
As an acknowledged leader in geotechnics, Arup is often asked to push the essential skill and science of designing and building structures in the ground. Wherever difficult ground conditions, sensitive environments, or ambitious projects present geotechnical challenges, we provide robust and advanced solutions.
Our geotechnical expertise underpins Arup’s work on projects from building design to infrastructure for water, energy, mining rail, highways and aviation. To the full range of geotechnical needs, we bring interconnected ground engineering skills, which are complemented by our expertise in hydrogeology, seismic design, geology and risk management, plus many other specialised services.
The Opportunity
In support of our journey towards becoming a recognised global leader in the energy transition, Arup currently has an exciting opportunity for a Principal Geotechnical Engineer to join our established and growing offshore wind design team in our Bristol office.
You will be responsible for leading the geotechnical aspects of offshore wind projects during early site selection phases, developing site investigation strategies and delivering detailed interpretation of site investigation results. You will lead all aspects of geotechnical design associated with the offshore wind project cycle, from concept through to FEED, detailed design and including installation assessments.
You will ensure your team delivers geotechnical designs for the offshore wind sector to a high standard of quality and client satisfaction, promoting and driving the development of processes for efficient design including automation. You will also take part in mentoring and managing our junior members of the team. Beyond winning and delivering commercial projects for clients, the role will also require you to support and drive technical developments within your remit, fostering a spirit of growth and innovation.
This position offers scope for personal development, and we encourage self-directed thinking, focusing on developing existing skills and experience, and the sharing of these experiences with other team members.
Is this role right for you?
A person who is a good fit for the role will have:
* Proven track record of leading the geotechnical design of a range of foundation types for offshore wind turbines at FEED and detailed design level.
* Experience in conducting the installation assessments of offshore wind foundations (e.g. pile driveability, pile drillability, suction caisson installation) at FEED and detailed design level.
* Experience in planning, managing, supervising, and interpreting ground investigations and laboratory test results (including advanced cyclic testing).
* An in-depth understanding of industry standard numerical modelling software such as LS-DYNA or PLAXIS to model soil-structure interaction problems including cyclic loading effects.
* Ability to drive business development through high level client engagement, preparation of high-quality bid materials and other networking forums.
* Excellent inter-personal skills and the ability to motivate, develop and grow a wider team of more junior colleagues in the pursuit of project development excellence.
* A driving ambition to grow Arup’s position in the offshore wind sector, using your technical competence and deep domain industry experience to establish credibility with Arup’s customers.
