Interim Locum Solicitor – Employment Services

Pay Rate: £43.00 per hour PAYE
Hours per week: 15 across 2 days
Role Length: This opening assignment is for 11-12 months

The role will be up to 2 days per week; however, it may increase in hours depending on caseload. Flexibility is needed to work additional hours to cover hearings (e.g. 10 days in March).
The Employment Solicitor will deal with a small number of ET claims varying from equal pay, unfair dismissal, discrimination, and harassment. Judicial mediation, preliminary hearings, and preparation for final hearings will be needed. Advice on TUPE provisions in contracts and TUPE clarification questions arising from procurement processes and complex grievances.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Undertake advocacy, representation, and advice in Employment Tribunals, committees, and panels as appropriate.
2. Keep legal knowledge up to date, carry out legal research, and maintain a thorough knowledge of existing and new legislation in relation to the practice area.
3. Provide support and assistance to legal officers in the Commercial and Governance Team and provide cover as required, assisting and cooperating with officers within the wider Legal Services Division.
4. Provide training to the legal services division, Council officers, and clients.
5. Assist the specialist lawyer in managing the relationship with the service area relevant to their area of practice.
6. Identify and mitigate high-risk cases in discussion with the Legal Service Team Manager.
Qualifications:
1. Qualified to practice as a Solicitor/Barrister/FCILEx.
Skills & Experience:
1. Minimum of 12 months recent experience in a similar role or context, ideally within a public sector organisation.
2. Demonstrate the ability to advise on complex and sensitive legal issues in a constructive and positive way.
3. Manage a caseload of legal work with minimum supervision, exhibit good organisational skills, and work successfully as part of a team.
4. Ability to grasp and assimilate new information quickly and to work under pressure, to deadlines.
5. Anticipate and identify problems to senior management at the correct time.
6. Able to demonstrate knowledge and/or experience of equalities and diversity issues.
7. Ability to anticipate and identify complex issues and high-risk cases to the Manager in good time to support good governance and decision-making.
8. Strong IT skills including Microsoft packages or equivalent (e.g., G Suite, Adobe Pro).
