Band 6 Children's Occupational Therapist
Part-time- 30 hours per week (Flexible working considered, regarding hours)
We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Occupational Therapist to join our team. An exciting opportunity has arisen to work as a Band 6 Occupational Therapist in the Children's Occupational Therapy service.
The post holder will work as part of a team to provide a high-quality occupational therapy service to children up to 19 years of age with difficulties in play, self-care, and/or school occupations due to a variety of conditions.
They will plan and provide specialist Occupational Therapy assessment, advice, and intervention for children with functional difficulties, working closely with the multidisciplinary team, school staff, and families. They will work autonomously and without direct supervision in a defined clinical area, and will be accountable for their own clinical actions.
The post holder will have experience and knowledge of equipment assessment and provision and working in Special School provisions.
The post holder will see children in a variety of settings including the Phoenix Children's Resource Centre, children's homes, special school provisions, mainstream schools, and nurseries.
Main Duties of the Job
To be responsible for a clinical caseload and to develop and provide a specialist paediatric occupational therapy service, undertaking assessment, interpretation of assessment results, evaluation, treatment, and advice.
To carry out assessments and evaluate the child's occupational performance through the use of standardised and non-standardised assessments, observation, interview with parent or carer, and/or parent and teacher questionnaires.
To develop, plan, and implement a specialist Occupational Therapy treatment programme and strategies to enhance the child's ability to perform everyday activities and participate in multiple environments through verbal and written advice and recommendations, written advice sheets, individual treatment, and/or group therapy.
To assess the child's need for small aids and specialist equipment (e.g. specialist seating, bath aids, and toilet aids), advise and recommend/provide appropriate equipment for use at home, preschool, and school, in line with service criteria.
To review equipment, checking size and suitability as required, including completing appropriate adjustments to suit the child's changing needs in a range of performance contexts.
To work autonomously and without direct supervision in a defined clinical area, and will be accountable for their own clinical actions.
Person Specification
Training
* Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
* Evidence of attendance at training in the area of assessment and treatment of children with functional needs
* Upper limb assessment / Interventions/splinting
* Relevant post-registration specialist education - ideally sensory integration training levels 1 and 2
Qualifications
* Degree/Diploma in Occupational Therapy
* Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council
* Member of the specialist section: children and young people (Royal College of Occupational Therapists)
Specific Skills
* To be able to independently manage a complex caseload within a community paediatric setting
* Ability to prioritise workload and own time effectively
* To be able to assess and analyse a child's functional abilities using standardised and non-standardised methods according to best practice, utilising activity analysis skills
* Excellent written communication skills with the ability to record actions and decisions accurately and succinctly within notes and reports.
* Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills, communicating with a range of professionals, children, and parents in a professional and sensitive way
* Able to feedback regarding Occupational Therapy assessment and intervention to both parents and children in an appropriate way and able to manage difficult conversations with empathy and tact.
* Excellent working knowledge of child development and varying conditions and the implication for Occupational Therapy.
* Able to practise using an evidence-informed approach for assessments and intervention, using an occupation-based focus and confident in relating theory to practice.
* Current driving licence and have a vehicle to use for work/able to use public transport for visits.
* Knowledge and experience of basic audit and quality tools
Experience
* Previous experience of working in community NHS Paediatric practice.
* Experience in assessment, planning, and delivering occupation-focused intervention for children with a range of difficulties (e.g. coordination difficulties, sensory processing difficulties, and children with physical disabilities).
* Experience of equipment prescription and its principles in the paediatric setting.
* Experience in running training sessions for carers, clients, and other professionals.
* Experience in specialist school provision.
* Working knowledge of the SEND agenda and reforms.
* Experience in delivery of presentations or facilitating workshops.
* Experience of supervising staff and/or students as fieldwork education.
* Experience in setting up new projects/initiatives.
Information Technology
* Efficient computer user for all used programmes such as Microsoft Office, internet, email.
* Knowledge of EMIS
