Duties and Responsibilities To act as a source of knowledge on the management of current caseloads and provide an advisory service to patients, relatives, other healthcare professionals and students. To take a role in the assessment and treatment of patients within the Respiratory Team. To provide physiotherapy treatment indicated and to maintain records as an autonomous practitioner. To deliver a Pulmonary rehabilitation group and deliver education in a group setting. To hold responsibility for own case load and be responsible for a defined area of the service or a particular patient type, working with direct supervision. Supervision takes the form of regular formal training and clinical reasoning sessions. Access to advice and support from a senior therapist is available if required, clinical work is routinely evaluated. To assist the team, in planning, co-ordination, delivering and evaluating the Respiratory Team. To participate in the education and training of physiotherapists, other health professionals and physiotherapy students in the management of physiotherapy conditions as appropriate. Key results from the job holder To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your own work including the management of patients in your care. To ensure high standards of clinical care for the patients under your management, and support more junior staff to do likewise. Post holders are required to work independently, guided by defined clinical and professional guidelines. Access to a more senior member of physiotherapy staff is available when necessary. Clinical work is evaluated on a regular basis. To interpret and analyse clinical and non-clinical facts to form accurate assessment and risk stratification in a wide range of conditions, to recommend the best course of intervention, and to develop comprehensive discharge plans in regard to the patients self-management. To undertake the comprehensive assessment of patients, including those with a complex presentation, using investigative and analytical skills and to formulate individualised management and treatment plans, using clinical reasoning and utilising a wide range of treatment skills and options to formulate a specialised programme of care. To maintain accurate and comprehensive patient treatment records in line with Trust Policies. To maintain timely statistics and other records as requested by the Respiratory team. To regularly supervise, evaluate and assess Physiotherapy students to include negotiating learning contracts and setting objectives. To monitor the quality of record keeping for students. To comply with The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct be registered with the Health & Care Professions Council and Trust Policies and Procedures. To respect the individuality, values, cultural and religious diversity of clients and contribute to the provision of a service sensitive to these needs. Planning and Organisational Duties To accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients, and to organise this effectively and efficiently with regard to clinical priorities and use of time. To accept partial responsibility for any tasks delegated to less senior qualified or unqualified staff. To assist the team leader in developing policy changes within the speciality that will impact on service users. To assist the team leader in ensuring that designated staff implement policy and service development changes. To work with the team leader in developing the operational management of the Respiratory team. To participate in the day-to-day organisation and development of the Service. To contribute to the Trusts clinical governance arrangements and quality agenda. To demonstrate understanding of national and local guidelines and legislation relating to health and social care and their impact on service delivery. Be responsible for the monitoring of materials and equipment and bring defects or deficits to the attention of the Clinical Manager. To exercise good personal time management, punctuality and consistent reliable attendance. To review and reflect on own practice and performance through effective use of professional and operational supervision and appraisal. To maintain a professional portfolio of Continuing Professional Development recording learning outcomes through participation in internal and external development opportunities. To comply with annual PDR and appraisal system. To contribute to development of practice/procedures etc. within the Respiratory team. Communications and Key Working Relationships To communicate effectively with patients and carers to maximise rehabilitation potential and to ensure understanding of condition. To use communication tools (verbal and non-verbal) to gain informed consent with patients where there will often be barriers to effective communication e.g. loss of hearing, anxiety. To assess capacity, gain valid informed consent and have the ability to work within a legal framework. To assist the Team leader in ensuring that designated staff implement policy and service development changes. Responsibility for Finance To advise Clinical Manager on resources required to carry out the job. Responsibility for Human Resources To assist the team leader to educate and supervise and performance manage more junior staff, and Therapy assistants, and student including formal supervision and appraisal. Responsibility for Health & Safety Compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 the post holder is required to fulfil a proactive role towards the management of risk in all of their actions. This entails the risk assessment of all situations, the taking of appropriate actions and reporting of all incidents, near misses and hazards, and a statutory duty of care for their own personal safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions. Responsibility for Teaching To provide spontaneous and planned advice, teaching and instruction to relatives, carers, and other professionals, to promote understanding of the aims of physiotherapy, and to ensure a consistent approach to patient care. Supervise, educate, and assess the performance of physiotherapy students; this would be to a graduate standard and involve working with universities to ensure the standard of practice and teaching meets the standards set by the degree level qualification. Work Circumstances The Respiratory team is a 5 day service that operates from 08:00-17.00. There are no on-call responsibilities for this role.
