We are seeking to appoint a Head of Classics to lead the Department and to teach both Latin and Classical Civilisation from KS3 to A level as agreed with the Director of Languages. The successful candidate will contribute actively to the Classics Department through sharing of best practice and support.

Main Purpose: To teach allocated pupils from KS2 to A level as agreed with the Director of Languages. To contribute actively to the Classics Department through sharing of best practice and support or extension of pupils as necessary. To undertake associated pastoral and general duties as well as actively contribute to the co-curricular life of the School. To act at all times with full regard for the School’s ethos, aims and policies.
The post of Head of Classics is an important role within the Languages faculty. It offers an exciting opportunity for an ambitious teacher of Classics to work as part of a highly successful Faculty within the School. Remuneration for the post is based on Wells Cathedral School’s own scales.
The Department: The Classics Department currently consists of a Head of Classics, another full-time member of staff, and a part-time member of staff. Currently, Latin is delivered in every year group; with pupils being able to opt to study the subject at GCSE and A level. The department follows the OCR specification for both these qualifications.
Classical Civilisation is currently an option choice at GCSE and A level and the department follows the OCR specification. The Department’s approach to the teaching of Classics is one of teamwork and continual development. There is a wealth of experience in the Department and wider Faculty and staff actively embrace the latest educational theories to improve both their teaching and learning.
