Managerial responsibilities: to include level of responsibility for: Ensure the work environment is a safe place for patients, staff and the public; challenging sub-optimal practises in e.g. patient care. Work closely with the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse in ensuring a high standard of patient care by providing good leadership and managerial skills. Promote ward and Trust in the most positive manner to patients and public at all times. Assist the junior sister on a daily basis in ensuring the duty roster is balanced to meet the workload of the ward. Assist the junior sister with audits of patient care, learning from findings and implementing changes in practice as appropriate; monitoring their effectiveness. This includes Risk Assessments as per the Trusts Risk Management Policy Handle conflicts, grievances and complaints in a professional manner and refer to senior nurse in charge. Coordinate and monitor the progress of patients along their care pathway and report any variances from the pathway such as long wait times in clinic. Report any incident or omission using the hospital electronic reporting system (Datix) as per Trusts Policy. Carry out Root Cause Analysis as appropriate. In conjunction with the senior sisterensure learning is taken from each and assist in disseminating this amongst the ward team Have a basic understanding of the ward budget & costs in order that all resources are used appropriately and efficiently. To be able to use the trust ordering system. Assist the clinic manager and junior sister in any implementation of change projects in a pro-active and constructive manner. Ensure patient, staff & data confidentiality at all times in accordance with the Data Protection Act and the Caldecott guidelines. Attend meetings as appropriate and assist the team in communicating any changes in practices as agreed with those not present at the time. Advise the Clinic manager regarding any issues concerning staff, their working practices or the environment, which might have a detrimental effect on patient care or the team of staff. Ensure compliance with the medicines management policies Exercises leadership within the department and co-ordinates and supervises the team in the absence of the clinic sister, ensuring expertise and staff numbers as appropriate. Assist with ensuring that all necessary material resources are available for clinic sessions and allocate as appropriate. Expected to work unsupervised but to seek appropriate advice where necessary and to report to the clinic sister on any special problems that might occur.
