The Trust is an Orthopaedic tertiary centre, with 14 theatres delivering complex elective orthopaedic surgery supporting specialist oncology and spinal services. The successful individual will be part of a senior team managing theatre services prioritise the needs of patients who require our expertise. The successful applicant will need to demonstrate extensive theatre experience to join our senior leadership team. We are looking for an individual who is flexible, innovative, highly motivated with great people and leadership skills who wants to learn and develop within a challenging and exciting role, where you through strong and effective leadership will lead all health care workers. Working with the Divisional Head of Nursing and Clinical Services Manager to ensure high quality care for service users and in particular be accountable for the theatre staff development and professional standards. You will be overseeing the day to day operational management of the Theatre Suite: including allocation of staffing. And managing and being accountable for the Theatre financial resource ensuring that it remains within budget.

Main duties of the job
As a senior leader in our Trust, you will work collaboratively with the Clinical Services Manager and Clinical Medical Lead for Theatres. The role of the Matron will focus on the provision of high-quality care, visibility, professional leadership and have a clear remit of setting and maintaining standards of clinical excellence, improving outcomes and experiences for patients.
You will be strong leader who is able to demonstrate proven ability to successfully lead compassionately, inclusively whilst at the same time motivating the clinical team. You will also be a positive and professional role model.
You must have excellent communication and influencing skills to both initiate and support change together with the tenacity and passion required to drive success.

PROFESSIONAL
1. Provide guidance, support and professional leadership to all staff within the theatre environment.
2. Provide a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.
3. Initiate, implement and evaluate quality control methods as appropriate to the theatre department.
4. Manage Control of Infection in Theatres with support from the Infection Prevention and Control Team, reporting any problems affecting the unit.
5. Ensure all the staff within the Theatre departments are aware of their responsibility in the prevention and control of infection, and wear the necessary protective clothing during Theatre procedures.
6. Demonstrate an advanced level of clinical nursing practice which remains updated according to evidence. There will be some requirement for the job holder to work clinical shifts and also in accordance with their professional registration.
7. Ensure that care is planned and developed in a systematic way, in accordance with the agreed model of care.
8. Support with the investigate and monitor of complaints and PALs enquiries, within the department.
OPERATIONAL MANAGEMENT
1. To effectively manage the Units budget for consumables and staff to ensure that the unit works within the financial framework. To provide advice and information when necessary to ensure expenditure remains in target.
2. To provide accurate written reports to the Head of Nursing, Chief Nurse and other senior divisional managers when required.
3. To co-ordinate the units resources to ensure effective and full utilisation of funded resources and efficient delivery of the service.
4. To assist the triumvirate to develop a quality strategy for the Theatre areas in line with the Trusts strategic objectives.
5. To manage recruitment, retention and development of theatre staff within each of the areas in collaboration with the education team.
6. To explore and develop roles within the theatre in line with service needs and financial envelope.
7. To work in line with and develop integrated care policies.
8. To ensure that all staff have regular appraisals (PDR) and up to date development plans.
9. Encourage and manage performance through the appraisal process. Delegate work effectively, setting clear parameters of responsibility.
10. To work in line with the Matrons Handbook.
11. To ensure accurate and up to date documentation on both patient and staff records.
12. To provide effective management and leadership to all staff in all areas.
13. To take responsibility for risk management and clinical governance within all areas under sphere of responsibility. Ensure the triumvirate are aware of the risks and a mitigation plan as discussed.
14. Responsible for reporting instances where clinical targets may not be met in order to devise action plans and provide written reports when required.
15. Responsible for ensuring Workforce Key Performance Indicators for Theatre non-medical staff meet Trust targets and action plans are in place if required.
16. Responsible for overviewing the management of the preparation/maintenance of duty rotas, on Health roster, carried out by the Clinical Lead Specialists, to ensure they provide safe staffing and the most cost-effective cover for the department.
17. Ensure staff complete relevant trust training/competencies on commencing post and keeping up dates as necessary.
18. Utilise project and change management skills in order to streamline efficiency within the department as required.
19. Undertake skill mix reviews and ensure appropriate utilisation of staff within the department.
20. Play a key role in improving services in line with National policies and where appropriate, take a lead role on the nursing issues related to the implementation of National Service Frameworks applicable to sphere of responsibility.
21. Be responsible for HR issues within area of responsibility, taking action as necessary, and ensure that Departmental Sisters/Charge Nurses fulfil this role within their own areas.
22. Undertake employer related investigations as required.
23. Develop workforce plans as part of the workforce review and service developments, business planning.
24. Act as authorised signatory to budgets within area of responsibility where necessary.
