Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated Senior Medical Engineering Technician / Quality Manager to join a small friendly team based at Westmorland General Hospital.
The department is responsible for the commissioning, service and maintenance of a wide range of medical devices used within all areas of clinical care including ventilation, endoscopy, neonatal and theatre-based medical equipment.
Main duties of the job
Duties will include medical device commissioning, service, repair, implementation of regulatory action and safe disposal of devices at the end of life, and the development and implementation of the existing ISO9001:2015 Quality standard.
1. A good knowledge of electro-mechanical engineering theory.
2. A logical approach to fault finding on complex electro-mechanical medical equipment.
3. Proficient IT skills in the use of a database system for maintenance recording and be familiar with the Microsoft Office applications suite.
4. Knowledge of general medical equipment and medical terminology is essential.
5. The ability to communicate effectively and build lasting relationships with all members of staff, visitors, and suppliers.
6. Good organisational skills and be able to manage and prioritise their own day-to-day workload.
Working for our organisation
We operate from three main hospitals: Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

Person specification
Education and Qualifications
* Professional electronics knowledge acquired through BEng in electronics, Medical Engineering or equivalent with additional practical knowledge gained through technical training, short courses and developed practical experience.
* Physiology training to cover a range of specialist equipment. RCT Membership Internal Auditor training by a recognised certification group for ISO 9001:2015.
Experience
* Analysis and diagnosing of faults in complex Electronic/Mechanical equipment. Experience of safe operating systems used in the maintenance and repair of complex electronic equipment. Self-management of workload including planning for routine maintenance and prioritising of breakdown requests. Medical device calibration and maintenance.
* Evidence of regular training courses to further skills and experience. Auditing within an ISO accredited service or workplace.
Skills, Ability, and Knowledge
* Effective verbal and written communication. Working within an ISO 9001:2015 Quality System environment. Experience of working within the scope of MHRA Managing Medical Devices (April 2015). Workload planning and prioritisation for a team of engineers. Highly developed skills - manual dexterity, co-ordination and sensory skills for use of precision tools & materials in the maintaining of delicate equipment. Quality systems and database management. Ability to work in awkward positions and unpleasant environments e.g. plant rooms, behind patient bed heads and within theatre environments.
* Knowledge and understanding of Health Service issues. Medical Device and Equipment Management for Hospital and Community based Organisations. Evaluation of medical devices-acceptance testing.
Personal Qualities
* An ability to work effectively, individually or as part of a team. To communicate, confidently and effectively with colleagues at all levels of the organisation and with external agencies and industry. An ability to demonstrate initiative, enthusiasm, problem solving, together with sound judgement and a professional approach. Ability to travel as required.
