1:1 SEND Teaching Assistant – ASD Provision (Mainstream School)

Salary: £80 – £90 per day (depending on experience & qualifications)

About the Role
Connex Education is currently recruiting for a 1:1 SEND Teaching Assistant to support a pupil with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) within a mainstream primary/secondary school in Barking & Dagenham. This school has a dedicated ASD alternative provision, designed to provide targeted support to pupils with additional needs while integrating them into mainstream education where appropriate.
As a 1:1 SEND Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with an individual pupil, ensuring their educational, emotional, and social development needs are met. You will collaborate with the school's SEND team, class teacher, and SENCO to implement the pupil’s Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and provide personalised learning support. The role involves assisting the pupil both within the mainstream classroom and within the ASD provision as needed.

Key Responsibilities
* Provide 1:1 tailored support for a pupil with ASD, adapting learning materials and strategies to their needs.
* Work closely with the class teacher and SENCO to implement the EHCP.
* Support the pupil’s transition between mainstream lessons and the ASD alternative provision.
* Use strategies to manage sensory needs, social interactions, and emotional regulation.
* Foster independence and confidence in learning through structured support.
* Communicate effectively with parents, carers, and external professionals.
Assignment Details
* Full-time role, Monday to Friday.
* Working hours: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM (dependent on school).
* Long-term position with potential for extension.
Person Specification
* Experience working with children with ASD in a school or similar setting.
* Knowledge of ASD strategies such as visual supports, PECS, Makaton, and sensory regulation techniques (desirable).
* Ability to provide structured and nurturing support to help the pupil access learning.
* Relevant qualifications in SEND or Teaching and Learning (desirable).
* A current DBS on the update service or willingness to apply for one through Connex.
