About Anaphite At Anaphite we believe creative chemistry will accelerate the energy transition. Our mission is to decarbonise and improve battery production by helping the industry to shift to dry electrode coating. We work with the battery industry to optimise dry electrode coating, manufacturing better and more sustainable batteries at lower cost. Anaphite was founded in 2018 and is headquartered in central Bristol in the Southwest of the UK. Who are we looking for? Anaphite are in a period of rapid growth and are looking for motivated individuals to join the Electrode Team to explore the application of novel dry coating formulations and electrode designs, grow our capabilities and help steer the development of Anaphite’s core technology. This exciting opportunity as a Senior Material Scientist would see the successful candidate working alongside experienced Chemists, Battery Scientists and Process Engineers, getting involved in the development of high-quality materials for the production of electrodes for Li-ion batteries; this will involve building an extensive knowledge surrounding the technologies, materials and chemistries that are involved, exploring and defining new ways to apply material science to the design, characterisation and quality control for electrode precursor powders, composites and electrode films. We are looking for a practical, organised and driven candidate with good experience in material design and characterisation fundamentals to help generate new insights and approaches to advancing and applying our technology towards evolving commercial opportunities. Responsibilities/Duties: Contributing towards product & scientific development through characterisation of a range of battery relevant materials, including foils, metal oxide actives, carbons and binders, and relating material characteristics to performance in composites and their relevant formation processes; Characterise the physical, mechanical, chemical and thermal properties of electrode materials and composites, such as particle size distribution, material density, fluid and powder rheology, stress-strain response, adhesion/cohesion, dynamic mechanical properties, powder and film conductivity, moisture content, DSC, TGA, SEM, EDX and chemical properties from FTIR and Raman. Relate properties and process to structure and performance; Develop new test methods where there are opportunities for novel/enhanced material characterisation to gain insights into electrode materials and composite processes and performance; Develop and improve existing characterisation to enhance efficiency, through a combination of increased accuracy and throughput. Explore opportunities to transfer offline characterisation processes to in-line characterisation and automation of analysis; Support development and characterisation of external projects and tailor characterisation of materials towards customer standards and specifications were necessary; Mentor and train new staff through the use of standard operating procedures for measurement and analysis techniques, helping to bring them up to speed and maintain expected standards and Complete relevant processes and documentation to ensure Health and Safety standards are upheld. Required Proficiencies/Experience: Relevant experience in industrial R&D; Experience characterising materials and composites for battery applications; Proficiency in data handling and analysis software packages such as Excel or Origin or Matlab etc; Experience of multiple material characterisation techniques relevant to battery material R&D; Proficiency in communication of results and work using visual, written and spoken methods; Able to work both without supervision and with a team; Highly organised and have an eye for detail. Salary/Benefits: Base Salary: £44-53k annually depending on experience; Learning and development for career progression - opportunities to attend conferences, mentorship and chartership opportunities, paid study leave, participate in outreach activities and give back to the community; Compelling sign-on share options bonus with the potential for significant future value - we want you to be rewarded for Anaphite's success; Vitality health insurance package including dental, optical, mental and general health; Discounts and rewards through our Vitality app such as gym memberships, headspace app and much more Work/life balance: enhanced maternity, paternity and adoption leave, paid bereavement leave, annual leave that increases with each year of service up to 30 days, enhanced sick pay; Flexible working outside of core hours 10am-4pm; £1000 towards relocation expenses, if applicable; Referral scheme if you recommend colleagues to the organisation; 25 days holiday plus 8 statutory bank holidays (increasing up to 30 days with continuous service); Electric car scheme (Salary Sacrifice); Weekly fruit delivery & breakfast club; Anaphite pension scheme and Anaphite regular socials.
