Business Group supports British businesses in key UK sectors, at home and abroad. We work to grow the UK economy, using insights from businesses engagement to shape policy and deliver ground-breaking initiatives. The group lead’s DBT’s business engagement, offering a unique combination of sector expertise, strong business relationships, and strategic policy insights.
The Strategy Team sits at the heart of Business Group. We coordinate responses to challenges which have a cross-cutting impact on UK industry. We support a diverse group of sector teams within the department, including steel, automotive, hospitality, retail, and professional services, among many others. We also work closely with analytical colleagues to develop insights into critical policy issues.
The team coordinates responses to complex issues which impact a range of sectors. Examples include coordinating Business Group’s response to the Spending Review, assessing the impact of the US election, and developing policy recommendations on how multinational enterprises’ influence UK policy. Our cross-cutting projects are often high profile and provide exposure to senior civil servants at the highest levels of Government, both in the UK and with colleagues across the globe. Other work includes monitoring and reporting on departmental priorities and representing the work of Business Group to central strategy teams. The role will be varied, and would suit a candidate with a proactive, solution driven mindset, and experience of working with evidence and data.

The Senior Strategy Advisor role involves:
1. Leading development of projects in policy areas which affect a broad range of businesses. Working with evidence and data to develop policy insights, using programmes such as Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel.
2. Supporting corporate activity for Business Group, including feeding into the departmental Outcome Delivery Plan, and supporting initiatives to develop the Group’s ways of working, mission and vision.
3. Building relationships across DBT and government, to influence decision making around cross-cutting issues facing businesses.
4. Rapidly responding to fast moving commissions, such as providing inputs into briefings, ministerial speeches, policy development, and presentations.
5. Managing relationships with sectorteams to identify emerging business and economic risks.
6. Proactively identify upcoming issues which might affect businesses, and scoping deep dives into these topics.
7. Potential for line management of one Strategy Advisor.
