Job overview
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated specialist clinical pharmacist to join our Pharmacy Chemotherapy and Technical Services Unit at the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital. The role involves providing a specialist clinical pharmacy service to the oncology and clinical haematology specialties, ensuring high-quality and safe preparation and supply of chemotherapy medicines to patients, in line with current commissioning criteria. Extensive training will be provided to support your personal development, and you will be fully supported by the team. Once trained, you will support, train, and mentor junior staff members who rotate through pharmacy chemotherapy and aseptic services. The role requires working core hours, Monday to Friday, with participation in late-night, weekend, and bank holiday rota working, with potential for home working once fully trained.
Main duties of the job
* Assist the Lead Oncology Pharmacist in managing clinical verification of chemotherapy prescriptions according to current guidance and standards.
* Support the Principal Pharmacist for Technical Services in providing a GMP-compliant service, supplying aseptically prepared chemotherapy medicines.
* Support the development of pharmacists and technicians, ensuring team collaboration within the Pharmacy Technical Services Team.
* Act as an Authorising Pharmacist under section 10 exemption.
* Monitor and supervise staff within the Technical Service Unit, maintaining safe systems of work and professional standards.
* Support and deputize for the Lead Oncology Pharmacist as delegated or in their absence, representing them at meetings.
* Undertake development opportunities and support the Clinical Director of Pharmacy in delivering high-quality, cost-effective, patient-centered pharmacy services across the trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
* Ensure an efficient, high-quality technical and clinical pharmacy service that meets patient and healthcare professional needs.
* Clinically screen prescriptions for chemotherapy and biological medicines according to protocols and standards.
* Provide specialist advice on initiating, prescribing, and monitoring chemotherapy and supportive medicines.
* Verify oncology prescriptions in line with BOPA standards and ensure treatments meet standards.
* Act as an Authorized pharmacist, carrying out clinical and aseptic verification processes.
* Final check and release aseptically prepared products, ensuring documentation is complete.
* Ensure safe formulation and release of products according to quality systems.
* Assess outsourced unlicensed specials against GMP standards.
* Be trained and registered to undertake intrathecal chemotherapy checks and releases.
* Assist in developing and delivering intrathecal chemotherapy training.
* Manage documentation systems supporting quality management, including audits and risk assessments.
* Investigate problems with unlicensed medicines and outsourced products.
* Maintain safe working systems as per legislation and standards.
* Act as a resource for oncology and haematology, providing education and support.
* Promote safe handling, preparation, and storage of cytotoxic drugs.
* Record clinical interventions, report adverse reactions, and investigate errors.
* Support pharmacy governance initiatives to reduce medication risks.
* Interpret and apply information from medical and nursing notes.

Qualification
* MPharm Degree (4 years) or equivalent
* Member of GPhC
* PTQA Diploma
* Postgraduate clinical diploma
* Non-Medical Prescribing
Experience
* Advanced practice in relevant areas

* Ability to handle complex clinical issues
* Supervisory management experience
