Power Systems Engineer Higher Apprentice - Warwick
Location: Warwick, GB, CV34 6DA
Division: Higher Apprenticeship Programme
Job Function: This role is based within our Customer Connections Team. This is the department that connects customers — such as data centres, battery storage projects, offshore wind farms, transport networks and solar farms — to the electricity transmission network.
It’s a collaborative effort, and at any one time there are between 300-400 people working within the department. Their expertise includes: construction, project management, commercial, analytical, account management, communications, power system engineering and feasibility engineering.
During your time on the programme, a big part of your training will be on our specialised power system simulation software to:
* Analyse new generation, demand and interconnectors, using the results to design network upgrades
* Understand the impact these changes have on the performance of the overall system
* Ensure the transmission network is planned to acceptable and safe limits by comparing results with relevant industry standards (e.g., the Security and Quality of Supply Standards)
* Simulate events such as faults and outages to see how the transmission network behaves over a range of network conditions
* Working alongside experienced engineers across various departments to identify technical issues and decide on outcomes that affect not just the company, but the network as a whole
* Performing calculations on real network and customer data
* Providing technical insight to other roles
* Collaborating with other roles to understand the physical space constraints and customer priorities alongside your technical results to formulate a holistic design
* Getting involved in innovative projects, outside of business as usual
* Collaborate with colleagues at all levels of the business.
Most of your training programme will be off job learning. This is a mix of studies at Loughborough College, study time within your work placement for exams and coursework as well as integral National Grid training at our Centre of Excellence in Eakring.
You’ll regularly be staying away from home (either in Eakring or Loughborough through prebooked accommodation) to attend your training sessions.
During your on job time, you’ll complete a series of work based project tasks linked to your National Grid job role that will form part of your ‘end point assessment’ for the qualification.
Location: This role is based in our Warwick office, with opportunities to visit our substations throughout the apprenticeship and post-graduation, to gain insight into our physical assets and the practicalities of operation, which will help inform your job role when designing and adapting the network.
About you
* You will need to have a GCSE in English Language AND in Math at Grade C or above (or equivalent)
* 2 A levels / A2: Grades A* - C (including Math) OR Level 3 BTEC National Certificate or T-level in an Engineering discipline at Grade Merit or Distinction
You don’t need prior work experience; the determination and will to succeed is far more important as we will teach you everything you need to know. The role will provide you with a variety of skills including transferable skills to support your career development within National Grid.
