Here is a brief summary of how the pension scheme works. And how Auto-Enrolment and Opting Out/In work:
All new Candidates are automatically assessed for their eligibility for the pension scheme. If a Candidate is not Eligible, then nothing happens. Until the next time they are paid, when they are assessed again.
Once a Candidate first becomes Eligible, then they are automatically postponed for the first three months. This is standard, most Employers postpone their new Employees. When this happens, our pension provider, NOW pensions, will email the Candidate telling them that they are Eligible and what their Postponement Date (or Deferral Date) will be.
Once the three month Postponement period has passed, then the Candidate will be re-assessed for their eligibility for the pension scheme. If they are still Eligible, then they are then Auto-Enrolled into the pension scheme at that point. This is when Pension Contributions start being made on their Payslips. NOW Pensions will at this point send another email to the Candidate telling them that they have been Auto-Enrolled, and giving them details on how to Opt Out, if they want to.
If a Candidate is always not Eligible, or doesn’t want to wait until their Postponement to end to join the pension scheme, then a Candidate can do this. This is called ‘Opting In’. If a Candidate wants to ‘Opt In’, then they would need to contact NOW Pensions to arrange.
All of these steps are legal requirements (ie if a Candidate is Eligible when their Postponement ends) that we auto-enrol Candidates into the pension scheme.
