The Opportunity: The Laboratory Technicians role directly and indirectly supports scientists across R&D functions allowing scientists to concentrate on their core role. This role is to be primarily lab-based focusing on the delivery of scientific technical support to the R&D laboratories in accordance with Health and Safety. You will be trained in the techniques specific to the department and be responsible for a range of general laboratory duties as listed below. This role is multi-disciplinary and underpins the laboratory support operations inclusive of supporting areas and equipment on site which hold temperature-controlled samples and materials, such as Cold Rooms, Fridges, Freezers and Incubators. This role directly and indirectly supports scientists across UCB allowing scientists to concentrate on their core role, and forms part of an existing Laboratory Services team on site. • Carrying out routine checks and management for Cold Rooms, Fridges, Freezers. • Assisting with housekeeping of fridges, freezers and cold rooms – such as defrosts. • Responsible for improving and maintaining cleanliness and general organisation of temperature-controlled areas and equipment. • Using existing company templates and processes to complete Quality and Safety Inspections of Lab areas and temperature-controlled areas and equipment, documenting findings and improvement recommendations and distributing as necessary. • Provide regular glassware and plastics collection, washing and, sterilisation services (steam, dry or filtration) for the scientists to use within the laboratories. • Preparations of media and standard reagents as required and maintain stocks of both sterile and non-sterile consumable items within the laboratories. • To assist the scientific personnel, carry out routine cleaning and performance checking of equipment (pH meters and balances) keeping accurate results of work. • To protect the integrity of research activities, regularly check chemical and reagent expiry dates and arrange disposal of any out-of-date material via the correct waste disposal route. • Completing ad hoc work order requests for the laboratory areas within agreed timescales • To organise a continuous supply of basic PPE to ensure that all staff members or visitors entering the laboratory environment are appropriately protected. • Performing maintenance tasks on the liquid nitrogen dewars whilst adhering to site policies • Actively seeking innovations that may be used within the service to improve processes. • Ad-hoc mycoplasma cell line testing using aseptic techniques carried out in class 2 hoods. • Weekly cleaning and checks of the autoclaves, washing machines and Ph meters to ensure they stay in good working order to minimise downtime. • To complete all UCB and Avantor Services online training in a timely manner. • To undertake a 6-monthly pipette clinic service to further enhance the assistance given to scientific research. Health and Safety: • To carry out all scientific support activities in accordance with Health and Safety guidelines, GLS & GXP. • Adheres to SHE regulations, PPE policies and follows Avantor work instructions.
