Job overview
This post is a replacement for a retired colleague. The successful applicant will be required to deliver the microbiology and infection control service for Airedale NHS Foundation Trust. Applicants should possess FRCPath or equivalent and either have, or be within six months of receiving, a CCT in Microbiology or dual CCT in Microbiology/Infectious Diseases at the date of the advisory appointments committee. This must be evidenced on their application form. Full GMC registration is required.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will help to deliver the microbiology and infection control service for Airedale NHS Foundation Trust and manage the expanding clinical workload including ward liaison, antimicrobial stewardship, and laboratory development.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical and Diagnostic Service
1. To provide, in collaboration with microbiology consultant colleague, a timely, reliable and comprehensive diagnostic service for Airedale Hospital and Primary Care users.
2. To provide advice and support to clinical colleagues, and to be available to discuss management of patients with infections.
3. To provide an out of hours advice service on a shared on-call basis.
4. To participate in providing the Infection Prevention service with the nursing team.
Service Delivery
1. To maintain a close working relationship with the other Airedale Consultant Microbiologist.
2. To participate in the effective running of the Department.
3. To ensure participation in Departmental and external audit and quality assurance (QA) in Microbiology.
4. To work with the Clinical Director and other staff in the delivery of an efficient and effective pathology service.
5. To assist in co-ordinating the Pathology Department's response to any 'major incident’ occurring within the district.
Professional Standards and Clinical Governance
1. To maintain good clinical practice and contribute to mechanisms established within the Trust for the purposes of Clinical Governance.
2. To maintain and develop skills and knowledge in the specialty.
3. To participate in annual Consultant appraisal, revalidation and job plan review.
Clinical Supervision and Training
1. To contribute to the professional supervision and training of medical, scientific and technical staff within the Department.
General
1. To abide by Trust policies and procedures.
2. To undertake any other duties necessary for the successful performance of the role.
Person specification
Qualification and Training
* FRCPath or evidence of equivalent. Full and specialist registration with the GMC.
* Experience of a wide range of general diagnostic work in Microbiology and Virology.
* Progression through training programmes and achievement of professional qualifications.
Knowledge & Skills
* Up to date knowledge of Microbiology and Infection Prevention practice.
* Wide knowledge of Laboratory techniques including molecular methods.
