Job Purpose
The main purpose of the job role is to design and deliver a rolling programme of recreational mitigation, engagement and monitoring activities, and enforcement at Penhale Dunes Special Area of Conservation (SAC), an internationally important sand dune site.
This role has been developed in response to increased recreational pressure on Penhale Dunes SAC and is required to deliver Cornwall Council’s duties under the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017 (as amended). The role has been developed with input from Cornwall Council and Natural England and will be hosted by Cornwall Wildlife Trust who have management oversight of Penhale Dunes SAC. Cornwall Wildlife Trust will provide training, professional support and line management.
Key Responsibilities
1. Lead public engagement events and activities across Penhale Dunes SAC and in the wider community.
2. Provide on-the-ground wardening duties to educate and promote responsible recreation on the designated site.
3. Influence visitor behaviour in a positive way.
4. Develop collaborative relationships to bring positive change to benefit the protected habitats and species on the dunes.
5. Develop and deliver a range of events and activities to encourage responsible use of the dunes.
6. Monitor activities and wildlife on the dunes.
7. Develop a dog walking strategy for the dunes to include codes of conduct.
8. Assist with enforcement activities with the support of colleagues and partner organisations.
Qualifications and Skills
Good communication skills are a must, as is the ability to collaborate with partner organisations and foster effective relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
This is a part-time, 30 hours per week, 3-year fixed-term position.
