Job Summary: As a Band 8a Senior Pharmacist, you will act as the lead pharmacist for Paediatrics and Maternity Services. You will develop and provide clinical pharmacy services to these service lines, ensuring high standards of quality and professional practice. You will also offer specialist pharmaceutical advice to medical and nursing staff and coordinate the provision of chemotherapy to paediatric and adolescent patients.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Clinical:
o Provide and develop specialist Clinical Pharmacy services to Paediatrics and Maternity Service Lines.
o Implement effective pharmaceutical care, including drug history taking, medication review, and monitoring.
o Liaise with carers, senior pharmacists, and healthcare professionals to optimize medicines management.
o Provide dispensary services, including dispensing, checking medication, and patient counselling.
o Offer advice on the preparation and administration of intravenous drugs.
o Coordinate and monitor the provision of neonatal and paediatric TPN and chemotherapy.
o Support the roll-out of electronic prescribing to Paediatric and Neonatal Services.
o Write and update treatment guidelines in liaison with consultants.
2. Managerial:
o Act as lead pharmacist for Paediatrics & Maternity Service Lines, monitoring prescribing and drug expenditure.
o Participate in Paediatric Oncology Peer Reviews and Multidisciplinary meetings.
o Train and supervise other pharmacists in providing pharmaceutical care and chemotherapy.
o Facilitate the implementation of relevant network guidelines.
3. Governance:
o Attend Paediatrics and Maternity Risk meetings.
o Provide specialist pharmaceutical input into relevant MHRA alerts.
o Ensure appropriate storage and assessment of medicines, including Controlled Drugs.
o Initiate and participate in clinical audit and research projects.
4. Team Role/Management:
o Develop effective communication between Pharmacy staff and other departments.
o Assist in the training of other healthcare professionals.
5. Technical:
o Prepare extemporaneous medication for individual patients.
o Minimize wastage of medicines through efficient prescribing and supply.
o Dispense and record the issue of Controlled Drugs.
Person Specification:
1. Qualifications:
o Taught Masters Degree in Pharmacy
o Membership of the General Pharmaceutical Council
o Post Graduate Clinical Diploma / Diploma in General Pharmacy Practice (desirable)
o Independent Prescribing Qualification (desirable)
2. Experience:
o Minimum of 4 years post-registration NHS hospital experience
o At least 6 months NHS experience within the last 3 years.
o Demonstrable experience in general clinical practice, including medicine and surgery
o Recent experience in paediatrics, ideally within a rotation
o Audit experience
