Volunteer opportunity. Flexible hours between Monday to Friday, 8.30am and 2.30pm.
The Day Centre is at the heart of the homeless community in Southampton. We provide a safe space for up to 70 adults experiencing homelessness each day, offering basic facilities such as food, clothing, showers, and laundry. The service also has an on-site healthcare service and provides accommodation for up to 10 clients.
Our goal is to support clients in staying safe, maintaining their mental and physical health, meeting immediate needs, and helping them access support and long-term accommodation.
We have a supportive, collaborative team that supports each other and our clients. If you’re seeking a fast-paced, impactful role, this is the opportunity for you!
You will support clients who are homeless or in unstable accommodation by providing hot, nutritious meals twice daily.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
* Create a welcoming environment for rough sleepers and those facing homelessness or living in unstable accommodation
* Understand food hygiene and relevant legislation
* Support kitchen staff in preparing healthy, substantial meals
* Engage with clients, responding to their needs and respecting cultural differences
* Understand safeguarding responsibilities and report concerns promptly
* Maintain cleanliness in the kitchen and canteen
* Manage donations effectively
* Address health and safety concerns, reporting repairs promptly
* Handle difficult situations with clients, ensuring they feel listened to
* Practice non-discrimination and person-centered support
* Remain resilient in high-emotion situations, especially during conflicts
* Recognize physiological needs
* Perform other duties in the best interest of the organization and clients
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/TRAINING
Previous experience is not essential; however, a genuine passion for working with vulnerable people in the homeless sector is important. Our values should align with your ethics and ideals, and you should be committed to making a positive difference in others’ lives.
