Job Title: Senior Electronics Design Engineer
Location: Bournemouth, Dorset

Our team is currently expanding, and we are looking to hire a talented Senior Electronics Design Engineer to join our dynamic team.
At Ammtek, we specialise in delivering innovative solutions across the automotive, marine, aviation, and medical industries, where no two clients’ requirements are the same. Our projects span a broad range of technologies, focusing on embedded microcontrollers, the Internet of Things (IoT), power electronics, sensors and measurements, circuit design, and PCB layout.
From feasibility studies and proof of principle through to prototyping, design, development, and manufacturing, our engineers tackle complex challenges with creativity and precision.
Position Overview: We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Senior Electronics Design Engineer to join our team. Someone with great problem-solving capabilities who can think laterally and outside the box. You will also be competent with software development and be able to bridge the gap between software and hardware.
In this role, you will be responsible for leading the design, development, and testing of electronic systems for our clients. You will work closely with our multidisciplinary team to deliver innovative solutions that meet the unique requirements of our clients in various high-stakes industries.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Electronics Design & Development: Lead the design and development of electronic systems in areas such as motor control, strain sensors, instrumentation, communications, and power electronics. Software development is a key part of every project whether it's embedded C, VHDL, or a web technology. Opportunities also exist in database development, data analytics, and data presentation to enhance product functionality and user experience.
2. Project Leadership: Manage and oversee the entire product development lifecycle, from concept through to production, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
3. Client Interaction: Work directly with clients to understand their specific requirements and provide tailored design solutions. Act as a technical liaison, ensuring clear communication and satisfaction throughout the project.
4. PCB Design & Circuit Development: Utilise Altium Designer software to create PCB layouts, including schematic capture and component placement. Perform detailed circuit design, selecting appropriate components, and generating bills of materials (BOM) while meticulously documenting design decisions.
5. Prototyping & Testing: Develop prototypes, conduct rigorous testing, and troubleshoot designs to ensure functionality, reliability, and compliance with industry standards and regulations.
6. Documentation: Create comprehensive design documentation, including schematics, PCB layouts, bills of materials (BOM), and test reports. Maintain accurate records of design processes and decisions.
7. Compliance & Standards: Ensure that all designs comply with relevant industry standards, including safety, EMC/EMI, and environmental regulations.
8. Risk Mitigation: Participate in Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and other risk assessment processes to identify and mitigate potential design errors. Proactively work to reduce risks and enhance the robustness of designs.
9. Mentorship: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence within the team.
10. Continuous Improvement: Stay updated with the latest technologies and methodologies in electronics design. Continuously seek opportunities to improve design processes and product performance.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
1. Educational Background: A degree in Electronics Engineering or a related field is preferable, though equivalent experience will also be considered. A Masters degree or equivalent experience would be a plus.
2. Design Experience: Over 5 years of hands-on experience in electronic design within a relevant industry. A comprehensive skill set in electronics and software design including strong problem-solving abilities is essential.
3. Strong proficiency in analog and digital circuit design.
4. Proficiency in software design and development.
5. Experience with PCB design and layout tools (e.g., Altium Designer or similar).
6. Knowledge of microcontrollers, FPGAs, and embedded systems.
7. Familiarity with simulation tools (e.g., SPICE) and hands-on experience with prototyping and testing equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes, logic analyzers).
8. Understanding of EMC/EMI considerations and design practices.
9. Strong problem-solving abilities and a creative approach to design challenges.
10. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
11. Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
12. Strong organisational skills with attention to detail.
