An opportunity has arisen to join the Palliative Medicine Team in Rotherham who provide Palliative Medicine support across all settings: Hospice, Hospital, and Community. The role will be primarily based at Rotherham hospice on the hospice ward, but flexibility to work in the community and with colleagues at Rotherham Hospital is a necessity.
Excellent communication skills are required for supporting our service users and for working with a variety of Healthcare Professionals. Time keeping and managing a case load is important, and having experience of prioritising jobs is crucial. Delegation will be important to know when other members of the team can support a patient, such as the Clinical Nurse Specialists.
The applicant needs to be approachable and able to work well as part of a team but also to work autonomously at times. Having experience of working on a hospice ward may be beneficial to appreciate some of the challenges it brings but is not essential.
The successful candidate will be part of the non-resident medical on-call rota along with working weekends on the Hospice inpatient unit. Consultant support is available.
Main duties of the job
1. You will be expected to participate and facilitate the morning handover and support nursing colleagues with advice when required.
2. You will lead the ward rounds on the days when there is no consultant ward round.
3. You will be a part of the weekly Ward MDT and will chair the meeting in the absence of a consultant.
4. You will use System One and be proactive in updating other healthcare professionals involved in a patient's care.
5. You will support the clinical nurse specialists in Palliative Medicine and joint assessments may be undertaken.
6. You will provide some support and education to the medical students and GP Trainees who rotate into the team.
7. The role will be flexible at times to cover for absence or leave, ensuring that cover is maintained on the inpatient unit.
8. You will support with providing advice to healthcare professionals and patients who use our adviceline.

The Department
Rotherham Hospice
Rotherham Hospice is an independent hospice located about one mile from Rotherham General Hospital. It has 14 inpatient beds, a Day Hospice, and a community team comprising of Clinical Nurse Specialists and Hospice at Home Team that is available 24 hours a day.
Palliative Medicine
Palliative Medicine is part of Corporate Services. Currently, the Palliative Medicine Team is employed by TRFT but funded via a Service Level Agreement with Rotherham Hospice.
The Post
The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust, in collaboration with Rotherham Hospice, has 0.9 WTE maternity leave cover for 1 year, post available in Palliative Medicine. This post is at specialty doctor level and the successful candidate will participate in clinical work in Palliative Medicine, across Rotherham (hospital, hospice, and community) and will be based at Rotherham Hospice.
The successful applicant will be provided with supported induction into the NHS and the Trust and become a part of the clinical teams, where they will also be supported with their learning and personal development.
These posts are not approved by the Postgraduate Dean or the Royal College of Physicians for training, but the Trust recognises that individuals in these posts will need support and will provide access to teaching and learning resources within the Trust, for example, clinical skills training, departmental teaching, multi-professional team training, e-learning, and consultant feedback.

Education and Teaching
* To provide an appropriate contribution to the undergraduate teaching programme. The precise details of the contributions to teaching will be discussed with the appointee after taking up post.
Qualifications
* Full registration and a licence to practice with the GMC.
* Please confirm your GMC Registration number.
* MRCP qualification or equivalent.
Experience
* 4 years full-time post-graduate working in a clinical area (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis), at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed-term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty or equivalent experience and competencies.
* Experience of working at middle grade.
Ability/Skills
* Ability to demonstrate clinical leadership and management skills.
* Able to work effectively with colleagues in MDT.
* Capable of organising and prioritising work effectively.
* Evidence of ability to take full responsibility for independent management of patients throughout the patient journey.
* Demonstrable skills in communication (written & verbal), in particular with colleagues, patients, and families about sensitive and complex issues.
* Proven ability to work under pressure/stress.
* Ability to take independent clinical decisions when necessary and to seek advice from senior doctors as appropriate.
* Flexible in approach to work and a willingness to meet the changing needs of Hospice users.
* Evidence of initiative and self-motivation.

* Evidence of audit and the implementation of change following audit.
* Relevant research published in peer review journal.
