We are looking for an experienced environmental professional to join our team that regulates waste and industrial installations in the Thames Area.
- As a regulatory officer you will be at the forefront of protecting people and the environment from harm and helping contribute to a cleaner, greener world.
- You will undertake compliance assessment activities at a wide range of waste recycling and industrial sites.
- You will ensure permit compliance and make complex assessments of an operators' ability to protect the environment, prevent pollution and optimise use of resources.
- At times you will set conditions under which a site may continue to operate and enforce the law should they fail to comply.
- You will also respond to and investigate incidents making sure preventive and protective action is implemented.
- You will use your influencing and negotiating skills to secure best practice, often dealing with people at senior levels within industry, local communities and other interested groups. Salary and grading will be based on experience and skills.

The team
The Installations team sits within the Environment Management department in the Thames area. We regulate a wide range of waste and industrial sectors including landfill, chemicals, hazardous waste treatment, incineration, combustion, biowaste treatment and food & drink. We also work with the Health & Safety Executive as the joint Competent Authority regulating sites under the Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Regulations
Experience/skills required
We are looking for individuals with experience or transferable skills in the waste & industrial sectors, with a focus on regulatory knowledge. Key responsibilities and qualifications include:
- Opportunity to be considered for a development grade 4 regulatory officer role, with a 12-month structured training program to develop technical and regulatory capabilities, leading to progression to a grade 5 Installation officer.
- Strong technical knowledge, excellent communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to apply the principles of better regulation, dealing with complex, fast-changing situations to achieve optimal environmental outcomes.
- Preferably a degree or equivalent in a scientific, environmental, or engineering discipline; membership in a relevant professional organization is a plus.
- After training, take on an incident management role, including potential out-of-hours standby duties.
- A full UK driving licence is required, with flexibility to travel for site visits. A pool/hire vehicle will be provided for business travel.
