Fixed Term contract expected until 31 March 2027
Research Fellow (PhD obtained): Full time starting salary is £37,337 to £41,478 per annum
Research Assistant (PhD close to completion): Full time starting salary is £28,929 to £33,825 per annum
The Centre for Propulsion Engineering is looking to expand its internationally renowned activities with the recruitment of a Research Fellow in Icing Science and Engineering.
About the Role
The Centre’s icing team undertakes activities including research in ice adhesion, ice properties and instrumentation. They work closely with a substantial number of national and international industrial partners in the aerospace and wind turbine sector, focused on experimental work with dedicated icing wind tunnel facilities, as well as a vertical droplet tunnel. The team also undertakes research into fundamental modelling with molecular dynamic and ice/substrate interface bonding analysis.
This role is to support a new project investigating the effect of ice accreditation on aircraft surfaces. The role will include:
* Conducting icing experiments and providing support on test campaigns.
* Participation in project experiments.
* Dissemination of research findings.
* Responsibility for the research milestones and deliverables.
About You
Candidates must hold or be near completing a PhD in aerospace or mechanical engineering (or related field) with a strong publication record.
Expertise in experimental testing and measurement is essential, with icing experiments and computational icing modelling preferred. Knowledge of aerodynamic icing, icing wind tunnels, and 3D additive manufacturing is advantageous. Industrial research experience is a plus.
Strong communication skills, including summarising objectives and achievements, are essential. Applicants should be independent researchers with excellent presentation, reporting, and academic writing abilities, capable of delivering high-quality outputs and collaborating effectively with colleagues and partners.
Due to the nature of this role, you will be required to obtain UK Security Clearance (BPSS).
