Job summary The post holder will contribute to the delivery of a highly specialised Perfusion service throughout the Health Board in support, treatment, measurement or supplementation of the patients' circulatory system, using cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) or other treatment as necessary. They must demonstrate highly developed auditory, visual and perceptive skills in dealing with a mass of information on a second to second basis in the delivery of routine and specialist perfusion techniques. The post holder will perform the following duties and responsibilities, abiding by Health Board policies and procedures, Standard Operating procedures and protocols as laid down by the Perfusion Department and Chief Clinical Perfusion Scientist. The post holder will have full accreditation as a Clinical Perfusion Scientist with the Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland and will be registered as a licentiate member with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland. Main duties of the job Prepare, set up, prime, calibrate, maintain, run and dismantle the CPB extracorporeal circuit for every cardiopulmonary bypass procedure as an independent practitioner, often under pressure in urgent/emergency situations. Prepare and administer pharmacological agents or alter physiological parameters as necessary based on their own observations and interpretation of vital signs. Monitor and maintain all patient vital signs and physiological parameters, during cardiopulmonary bypass based on clinical knowledge of the cardiovascular system. A proficient knowledge of other organ systems including neurological, vascular, renal, endocrine and gastrointestinal systems is equally important in maintaining life. Ensure cardiopulmonary bypass machine and ancillary life support apparatus including saturation monitor are accurately calibrated prior to every procedure and perform minor maintenance when necessary. Assess patient condition from case notes, history, lab results and own observations and select (independently) most appropriate disposable and hardware equipment, pharmacological/ haematological agents based on requisite clinical knowledge and training. Make accurate calculations of necessary parameters based on clinical observations and patient history, this includes but is not limited to; calculation of circulating blood volume and blood flow rates, volume of pharmacological agents required in the perfusate (prime) and throughout the cardiopulmonary bypass period.
