This role is based in Belfast, at AXA we work smart, empowering our people to balance their time between home and the office in a way that works best for them, their team and our customers. You'll work at least 40% of your week away from home, moving to the majority of your working week from September 2025. Away from home means either attendance at one of our office locations, visiting clients or attending industry events. As a Senior Technical Underwriter, you will support the implementation of underwriting standards in AXA Ireland as an expert in the relevant Commercial classes of business in line with stated risk appetite. Responsibilities will include: • Setting and continuous review of risk appetite for commercial property and casualty classes of business • Identifying opportunities to improve products and strengthen our processes. • Developing underwriting standards and question sets to improve risk selection and improve the customer experience. • Reviewing and developing our Product wordings to adapt to changes in the trading environment and AXA Group requirements. • Producing reports with clear findings and recommendations on products, underwriting footprint, and market opportunities • Responding to governance and regulatory requirements and changes • Engaging with our Reinsurance colleagues and providers to maintain the required level of coverage. • Engaging with our colleagues in AXA Group and other AXA entities to share expertise and leverage the capabilities of the organisation. • Use portfolio analysis to identify areas of concern and development of action plans. • Develop and deliver Underwriting training programmes to sales and Underwriting staff on product features and acceptance rules, rating, and risk appetite. • Work with Trading Underwriting and Claims teams to ensure effective implementation of Underwriting standards. • Act as business lead or underwriting subject matter representative on cross functional projects. • Act as a point of referral for complex technical queries from staff in sales, claims, AXA Legal Services, broker partners, digital, marketing and other underwriting staff. • A minimum of 6 years’ experience in a relevant risk acceptance and rating environment. • Strong knowledge of the Northern Ireland insurance market. • CIP Qualification essential, with MDI or ACII desirable • Strong focus on professional standards and results and a track record of delivery in technical underwriting • Strong knowledge of the insurance regulatory environment in Northern Ireland and UK. • Excellent negotiation, influencing and interpersonal skills. • Strong analytical and numerical reasoning skills. • Experience of working in teams and successful record of project delivery. • Excellent relationship management skills and experience of building successful long-term relationships both internal & external. • Proven experience in decision making on a wide range of technical underwriting scenarios. • Strong customer advocate with clear understanding of the impact of underwriting standards on customer journeys and customer facing staff.
