The below job description outlines the position of Principal Mechanical Design Engineer.
We are looking for a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer for one of our maritime clients. Typically, this person will work as part of a multidisciplinary team producing designs for equipment associated with specialist Naval deck machinery, including Replenishment At Sea (RAS) equipment, winches, reelers, and cranes. The position will entail whole life technical involvement from interpretation of customer requirements during tendering, through to concept development, detailed design, manufacturing support, testing, and installation onboard the naval vessel. You will also be responsible for identifying and undertaking Research & Development (R&D) and improvement activities to keep the product at the cutting edge of Naval technology.
Duties and responsibilities of the Principal Mechanical Design Engineer
1. Lead the technical delivery of projects overseeing a multi-disciplinary team.
2. Develop Mechanical Engineering solutions that fulfil client requirements. Progressing from requirements capture, through concept design to product development, commissioning, and in-service support.
3. Identify and develop R&D and Continuous Improvement opportunities.
4. Investigate Safety and Technical problems using structured problem-solving techniques.
5. Self-motivated, prepared to use their own initiative, and able to work independently or effectively as part of a multi-disciplined team.
6. Provide technical reference / Guidance to equipment suppliers, internal departments, and customers. Approve / witness factory tests and inspections at supplier's works.
7. Manage supplier interfaces and provide technical assistance / approval to suppliers.
8. Check the technical work of others and provide technical Guidance to colleagues in other departments and to suppliers and customers.
9. Create technical design appraisal documents for submission to marine classification societies.
10. Manage Requirements, Risks, Assumptions, Interfaces, and Issues during all design phases.
11. Other reasonable tasks as deemed appropriate to meet the needs of the business.
Qualifications and requirements for the Principal Mechanical Design Engineer
1. BEng in a Mechanical Engineering discipline or equivalent technical capability based on practical knowledge and experience.
2. 10+ years engineering experience relevant to this role.
3. Experience of working in a highly regulated industry.
4. Experience spanning concept, product development, and in-service (ILS) support.
5. Experience of creation of equipment assembly arrangements and Engineering Bills of Materials using the company ERP/MRP system.
6. Assessment of designs to ensure code compliance using both hand calculations and Finite Elements Analysis (FEA) to assess and optimise the product.
7. Production of technical specifications, test procedures, and technical manuals for marine application mechanical systems and components.
8. Create technical equipment specifications, test procedures, design reports, test reports, and service/instruction manuals in accordance with marine and military standards.
9. Experience of product development with 2D and 3D CAD systems such as AutoCAD and Creo.
10. Manage digital product creation and modification within company data management systems.
11. Competent user of MS Office suite of programmes (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.).
12. Conversant with BS EN 8888 and BS EN 22553 for the production of drawings.
13. Experience of working closely with suppliers.
14. Ability to build relationships that bring together a broad range of talents, experience, and perspectives thus promoting the 'One Team' approach.
15. Acts in a professional courteous manner to our colleagues and Customers at all times.
16. Comply with the company's QHS&E policies and procedures.
17. Actively participate in Business improvement activities.
