Job Overview The TB nurse specialist will be a member of the TB service providing support to patients, families and carers. To deliver expert patient-centred nursing care and act as a case manager for own caseload of patients being treated for Tuberculosis/Non TB Mycobacterial infection (NMTB) and Latent TB Infection (LTBI). To autonomously run nurse led TB contact clinics and TB/NMTB patient clinics. Facilitate accurate healthcare information, health advice and appropriate support and referral. To participate in developing the strategic direction of the TB service in line with national and local targets working closely with the Band 7 TB Nurses. Main duties of the job To act as a case manager for own caseload, with support of the Band 7 nurse specialist. To support patients to adhere to treatment regimens by assessing and developing strategies to overcome barriers. Provide screening/immunisation clinics for TB contacts and new entrants, children and adults. Work under patient specific/group directions to perform and assess Mantoux testing, interpreting results appropriately, administering BCG as required or sending for further investigation. Maintain effective communications with the patients, families and all members of the multidisciplinary team members. Support, organise and where appropriate, manage Directly Observed Therapy Short course (DOTS/VOTS) within the community. Carry out contract tracing (statutory responsibility) thus preventing the spread of the disease. Respond to local policies on screening of patients identified as “at risk”. Support, reassure and educate the infected person and family/contacts. Facilitates a multi-professional approach to the management of TB/NMTB/LTBI patients across South, Mid and West Essex. Support and help implement changes in clinical practice based on current initiatives and research. To act as an advocate for the client group with the application of ethnic, legal and professional knowledge and skills. To support useful links with non-statutory bodies to achieve better comprehensive service delivery to patients.
