Job Summary:
The Financial Controller – Development and Construction is a senior role within the CWG Finance team with responsibility for a team of 11 and will assist the finance team to ensure high quality management information, analysis and insight is available to the business and ensure an efficient close process for statutory and shareholder financial reporting.
The CWG Construction and Development business employs [cXX] people and is currently undertaking over £2bn of construction activity with a pipeline that includes more than 500k square feet of commercial properties and over 2,400 new homes for sale and rent. This includes the significant Wood Wharf Phase 3 development to deliver 1,600 new homes, the construction of the largest wet lab building in Europe and repurposing and development management of other assets.
The role encompasses a range of financial reporting responsibilities working closely with the Group Financial Controller, Managing Director – Development, and other stakeholders (both finance and non-finance) to ensure that financial information is accurate, timely and robustly controlled. Close collaboration with the Investment and Development Debt Finance teams is critical to ensuring accurate information for valuation and debt purposes.
The role will has responsibility for a team of 11 and will assist the finance team to ensure high quality management information, analysis and insight is available to the business and ensure an efficient close process for statutory and shareholder financial reporting.
4 days in office / 1 WFH
Salary: £100-110K
Main Responsibilities:
1. Overall responsibility for the financial information of the Development and Construction segment ensuring that the information is robust, timely and subject to appropriate internal review. Provision of financial information in accordance with relevant timetables to operational management, group finance, commercial finance and external auditors.
2. Take ownership from a financial accounts perspective in interactions with tax, legal and development finance on restructuring, debt deals and other corporate transactions. Preparation of the accounting papers to support the treatment of the transactions, e.g. forward funding arrangements, development management agreements.
3. Responsible for preparation of management accounts for reporting to joint venture partners, including consolidations. Working with the Development management team to review funding requirements and facilitating equity calls from the JV partners.
4. Work collaboratively with operational management to review development costs against budget and reporting of the segment performance to the Development Managing Director.
5. Provide the linkage between the finance team and the Investment and Development Finance teams to provide financial information for valuations and debt draw downs.
6. Implementation and maintenance of robust internal controls and processes to ensure that financial information is reliable and CWG’s assets are safeguarded.
7. Develop the internal management reporting for the Development and Construction segment to enable improved analysis of business performance.
8. Lead on transforming the use of systems for the capture and reporting of financial information with a focus on efficiency and automation of key processes.
9. Responsibility for the preparation of the financial statements for the Development and Construction entities in accordance with the group wide financial timetable including managing the relationships with the external auditors.
10. Leadership of the Development and Construction finance team including performance management, training and development. A team of 11, including 4 financial accountants and 7 cost accountants.
11. Perform other finance tasks as required.
What We Require of You:
1. Qualified accountant (ACCA or ACA) with significant (minimum 5 years) post qualified experience. Experience (minimum 3 years) of having worked in an industry financial accounting role in the development/construction industry is essential.
2. Experience across a range of financial reporting aspects of a development finance function including reconciling actuals and forecast development cash flows, debt draw downs, development management agreements and valuation principles.
3. Experience of working with operational management in a collaborative way. Able to build and maintain relationships across the organisation with a strong sense of teamwork. Must be able to communicate effectively at all levels.
4. Experience of financial close processes in order to meet deadlines and of taking responsibility for financial results.
5. A leader of people who has demonstrated the ability to lead and develop a team to deliver successful outcomes.
6. Proven ability to implement improvements in internal controls and processes including through the use of technology solutions.
7. Bring energy and passion for what they do. A self-starter that is prepared to challenge the norm and explore new ways of doing things.
8. Strong attention to detail and agility to work across a range of areas is critical. Must be able to take ownership of tasks, bear responsibility for work produced.
9. Very organised with exceptional time management skills – able to work under pressure, prioritising and meet competing deadlines.
10. Experience with the Construction Manager module of Yardi would be an advantage but not essential.
