Junior Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine
Fixed Term Contract for 12 months to start as soon as possible.
(Flexible start dates may be considered)
The Emergency Department at Chelsea and Westminster Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is a dynamic, forward thinking, busy department with a strong focus on education, training and research. We currently see approximately 140,000 patients per year with a good case mix of critical care, majors, minor injuries and primary care patients. A £12 million rebuild in 2016 has resulted in a fit for purpose, light and airy department with an aesthetic design which is appreciated by patients and creates an attractive working environment for staff. Applicants are invited to join our dynamic team of 12 Consultants and 55 junior EM doctors.
Successful candidates will be working on a full rota with 1A banding. Our previous JCFs have been well supported clinically and academically and have successfully managed to join the ACCS EM training.
For informal queries please contact Dr. Claire Emerson (claire.emerson.nhs.net).
Interviews will be held week: TBC.

We provide services from two main hospitals, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and West Middlesex University Hospital, and a number of clinics across London and the South-East. We have over 6,000 members of staff that are PROUD to Care for nearly one million people. Both hospitals provide full clinical services, including full maternity, emergency and children’s, in addition to a range of community-based services across London, such as award-winning sexual health and HIV clinics.
We’re one of the best preforming Trusts in the country. We’re also one of the top trusts to work for – our staff say they’re engaged, motivated, and would recommend us as a place to work and receive treatment.
Our Trust has been rated by the Care Quality Commission as ‘Good’ in all five of the main domains of safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led, giving an us overall rating of ‘Good’. We’ve also been awarded an ‘Outstanding’ rating for ‘use of resources’ by an NHS Improvement inspection.
Our facilities are some of the best in the country. We have been investing around £10 million a year in our estate. We are currently spending £25 million on expanding our adult and neonatal critical care facilities at Chelsea and Westminster and redevelopment of our children’s unit at West Middlesex – in partnership with our charity, CW+ and generous donors.

We currently see approximately 130,000 patients per year with a good case mix of critical care, majors, minor injuries and primary care patients. The department has 9 resuscitation bays, two of which is dedicated to paediatric patients, a major’s area with 21 cubicles and one theatre which is used for suturing and plastering. There is a separate Urgent Care Centre co-located within the emergency department supported by a team of Emergency Nurse Practitioners, and by GPs and ED doctors of all grades. We also have an 8 bedded emergency observation unit within the emergency department for patients who require a further period of observation (less than 24 hours) or input from the multidisciplinary rapid response team.
The Paediatric Emergency Department is adjacent to the adult Emergency Department and is staffed by a separate nursing and medical team, however we work closely and often help with cross-cover.
The Department has a dedicated CT scanner and ED X-ray and we have very good access to advanced imaging like Ultrasound and MRI when needed.
The ED has an electronic patient record keeping system which is helpful to review medical discharge summaries, multi-disciplinary communication and for tracking.
The main service commitments of this post holder will be, under the supervision of the middle grades and consultants, to manage patients in all areas of the department – the Urgent Treatment Centre, majors and resuscitation room. The post is very well supported with approachable senior clinicians on the shop floor. The Consultants are very committed to teaching and post-graduate training and will ensure appropriate opportunities for professional development.
The rota is a full shift pattern providing 24-hour cover to the Emergency Department with 1:3 weekends. You will be expected to do nights and weekends, with the support of a two middle grades. The shift pattern is new deal compliant with a 1A banding. The pay banding may change to comply with new working practices or regulations relating to the reduction of Junior Doctors Hours.
