University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust
Are you a registered nurse with at least 12 months acute clinical experience looking to try something new? Are you keen to learn new skills? Are you motivated to provide a high quality service? Then an opportunity to join the Centre for Clinical Haematology (CCH) may just be for you.
CCH is a busy and fast paced unit that delivers treatment and support to adults, teenagers and young adults with a wide range of haematology conditions. We administer Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment (SACT) and supporting therapies. We also oversee an ambulatory Stem Cell Transplantation and chemotherapy programme, as well as a busy outpatient clinic.
You will be expected to work flexibly with shifts 8am-7pm.
If you have SACT, cannulation, phlebotomy, or central lines skills it will be an advantage, but if not, then you should have enthusiasm and dexterity to develop these skills and training/support will be given. You will be supported in this post by the Unit Manager and team, Matron for Haematology and the SACT trainers.
Main duties of the job
Main duties include managing and providing care for patients undergoing systemic anti-cancer therapies and supportive treatments. The post holder will display excellent communication skills and will be responsible for assessing patients for chemotherapy to ensure their physical condition and blood parameters are acceptable in order to receive prescribed treatment. Responsibilities also include the administration and disposal of intravenous chemotherapy in line with Trust and National guidance, working closely and communicating effectively with all members of the MDT, and undertaking procedures related to Stem Cell Transplantation. Cannulation, phlebotomy or central line skills are desirable but not necessary as you will be supported to develop these skills.
