Job summary An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint a hand and wrist fellow to join our existing well established, well regarded orthopaedic fellowship programme. Internationally renowned as a crucible of Orthopaedics, Liverpool was the home of the pioneers of orthopaedics and trauma surgery, Hugh Owen-Thomas, Robert Jones and Thomas Porter McMurray. The successful candidate will join a team of Orthopaedic professionals who remain committed to that culture of innovation today. The department has over 50 Consultant Surgeons covering the full range of Trauma & Orthopaedics, making it one of the largest UK centres and is a tertiary referral centre for all orthopaedic sub-specialities. It is the Level One Major Trauma Centre for Cheshire, Merseyside and the Isle of Man. All the surgeons are passionate about what they do and keen to develop you and your knowledge. The posts will be based at Broadgreen Hospital, our elective orthopaedic centre, and Aintree University Hospital, our trauma centre. Day to day work will be varied including outpatient clinics and theatre sessions. We encourage trainees to operate under supportive supervision to develop their surgical skills. A number of the consultants are deeply involved in educational roles all the way from undergraduate level to registrar level and pride themselves on training the next generation of surgeons. Main duties of the job This is a six-month post with a view to extend a further 6 months. The goal of the Fellowships is to take a peri-CCT, or equivalent, Orthopaedic Surgeon and, in a twelve month training programme, take them to a level at which they are capable of an independent practice in orthopaedics, specialising in Hand and Wrist Surgery. Service development may involve some alteration in the program during the attachment. The Fellow is under the supervision of Mr Brown and Mr Cheung. The ability to work flexibly and as a team will be essential, with good communication skills to relate to both fellow staff and patients. This enables the successful candidate to experience the whole range of experience offered by the unit. The post supports the clinical activity of both the Hand Team and the wider orthopaedic department. There is on-call commitment including weekend operating. The candidate will have time for research. The post offers directly supervised operating with Consultant support to practise acquired surgical skills.
