Job summary
To assist in patient care and practice related duties working under the direct supervision of the GPs / Practice Nurses and strictly in accordance with specific Practice guidelines and protocols. The Health Care Assistant will work collaboratively with the general practice team to meet the needs of patients, following policy and procedures.
The Health Care Assistant will be required to support the practice team in providing high quality primary care services to the patients registered with the Practice. The Health Care Assistant needs to practice in a safe and confident manner, respecting the principles of health, safety, infection control and security at all times
The Health Care Assistant will be required to attend all appropriate updates and refresher courses within the timeframes specified for the clinical tasks in question. This will take into account any new or amended policies, protocols and procedures relating to any aspect of clinical practice.
Main duties of the job
1. Phlebotomy
2. Blood Pressure checks
3. ECG
4. Urinalysis
5. Recording Height and Weight
6. Minor Surgery - assist GP's
7. Vaccination programmedelivery under PSD
8. Processingand management of laboratory samples as requested by the GPs.
9. Stock ordering.
10. Preparingand maintaining environments and equipment before, during and after patientcare interventions including assisting GPs during the performance of minoroperations.
11. Undertakingspecific clinical activities for named patients that have been delegated andtaught specifically in relation to that individual. Helpingraise awareness of health and well-being and how it can be promoted.
12. Maintainaccurate records
13. Assistingwith the collation of data on needs related to health and well-being.
14. LTC checksincluding diabetic foot checks
15. Spirometry(desirable)
16. Feno(desirable)
17. Any ad-hoctask as delegated by the GP Partners, within level of competencies.

Ashworth Street Surgery was formed in July 1999. There areeight doctors who form the partnership: Dr's Steve Doyle, Dave Osborne, ShaliniGadiyar, Mark Mudalige, Adam Simmons, Kevin Cody, Hassan Riaz and JamieOldfield.
There are also a large number of receptionists andadministration staff who play a very important role in the everyday running ofthe practice.
We are a large training Practice with 3 GP trainers.Training and supporting our attached learners is one of our core principles

The practice has seen an increasing list size since it wasformed and over time the surgery has developed a number of extensions atAshworth Street to accommodate both additional clinicians and their ownclinical consulting rooms. The most recent extension here at Ashworth Streetwas completed in July 2010 when a further six consulting rooms (fifteen in all)were developed on the first floor which also incorporates a lift to gainaccess.
In 2010 we saw the completion of our branch surgery inNorden. The surgery is based in what was the Norden Old Library on EdenfieldRoad. From the feedback we have received from our patients, this has proved tobe a huge success.

The duties and responsibilities to be undertaken by members of the practice Health Care Assistants may include any or all of the items in the following list. Duties may be varied from time to time under the direction of the Practice Manager, dependant on current and evolving practice workload and staffing levels:

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
35. GSCE Grade A to C in English and Maths
36. Qualified to NVQ level 3 in Health and Social Care
37. Qualified in Phlebotomy
Experience
Essential
38. 2 years general practice experience.
39. Knowledge and understanding of the role of a health care assistant.
40. Aware of accountability within the role.
41. Excellent team player.
42. Good organisational skills.
43. Emis clinical system experience.
Desirable
