Job Description:
At Leonardo, we are excited to be working with industry partners such as RAF's Rapid Capabilities Office and the UK Ministry of Defence to develop technologies for the next generation of combat air vehicles.
A new opportunity has arisen for a Lead Antenna Engineer to work within a growing team of Antenna Engineers in Luton, as part of a Core Delivery Team (CDT) across an RF product portfolio. This is a great opportunity for someone at Lead Engineer level, or approaching, looking to advance their technical leadership skills with a view to future progression to Chief Engineer or Technical Specialist.
This technical specialist role is responsible for driving innovation and antenna technical direction for the team.
Due to the nature of the role, it is a pre-requisite that any candidate must be a sole UK National and be willing to undergo and possess Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance.
What you'll do as a Lead Antenna Engineer:
As part of a growing UK wide team, and depending on your skills and expertise, work may include:
1. The development of existing products and advanced research into cutting-edge solutions for both new and existing platforms.
2. Using various EM simulation tools (e.g., CST Microwave Studio and FEKO) to analyse and optimise the design and installation impacts of antenna apertures and sensors on a platform.
3. Undertake the detailed design and development of antenna/radome (sensor/window) along with their associated electrical, mechanical and functional interfaces, working closely across a multi-disciplined team.
4. Technical assessment and modelling of system or subsystem design to ensure compatibility with overall system performance.
5. In conjunction with the Chief Antenna Engineer, set the technical strategy for the discipline and ensure that the people, process and tool capabilities are in place for their local team to achieve their objectives.
6. Generation of discipline estimations and project plans for project delivery as directed by the Chief Antenna Engineer.
7. Driving innovation within the department, acting as a technical specialist and focal point for mentoring junior engineers and for the transfer of antenna and microwave engineering domain knowledge.
What you really must have:
1. Degree in a STEM subject (Physics, Mathematics, Electronic/Electrical Engineering, System Engineering, or another science-based subject).
2. Experience/Education in at least one of the following areas of Electromagnetics: Radio frequency (RF) design, Antenna design/modelling/measurement (including installed antenna design), or Computational Electromagnetic Modelling (CEM).
3. Excellent numerical problem-solving skills and an aptitude for lateral or innovative thinking.
4. The ability to assimilate complicated topics quickly and possess strong communication skills to convey complex subjects across a multi-disciplined project team.
5. Demonstrated experience of technical leadership and delivery of complicated engineering work packages.
It would be nice if you had:
1. A Master's Degree or PhD in a subject such as Physics, Antenna Design, Propagation, Electromagnetics, Microwave engineering, or Data Analysis of measured data.
2. Working knowledge of EM modelling tools such as CST Microwave Studio or similar.
3. Scientific programming experience. MATLAB is preferred, but knowledge of other languages is acceptable if it suggests an easy adaptation to MATLAB.
4. A theoretical or practical knowledge of antenna measurements.
5. Measurement experience using standard microwave equipment (VNA, Spectrum Analyser, etc.).
6. Experience of direct line management of engineers, including conducting appraisals and managing personal development of team members.
