Locally Employed Doctor (Higher) - General Surgery GHH

This post represents a new and exciting opportunity at Good Hope Hospital for General Surgeons in Training aimed at surgical trainees at above ST3 level in General Surgery. Posts are fixed term for an initial 12 months but may be extended upon review. The appointed candidate will be expected to provide support for a wide range of emergency general surgery services and elective services as part of their job plan which may also include independent clinics and theatre activity.
The successful applicant will be appointed to the Colorectal and General Surgery service at Good Hope Hospital part of University Hospitals Birmingham. The post will be particularly suited to above ST3 applicants wishing to enhance their surgical training skills. You will be provided with a clinical supervisor and be expected to provide supervisory and leadership responsibilities to other surgical Resident Doctors at Good Hope. Good communication and participant interview skills are vital.
Main duties of the job
* Good clinical skills and be competent at managing the acute surgical on-call under supervision of the on-call consultant.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
* Enthusiasm and the ability to demonstrate independent thinking and problem solving.
This will consist of providing General Surgical on-call (please note that the service will be changing this to a 1:9 registrar on-call rota from August 2025, subject to senior management team approval) and cover for the CEPOD emergency theatre. There will be an expectation to deliver a weekly contribution to elective activity in the form of outpatients and/or theatre sessions when not on-call or undertaking CEPOD. Supervisory responsibility to other surgical Resident Doctors in training.
Main clinical and on call sessions will be based at Good Hope Hospital, with the requirement to attend Solihull for some elective commitments. The appointed candidate will need to be flexible regarding their working pattern.

Job responsibilities
Clinical duties will include being part of the general surgical registrar on-call rota (please note that the service will be changing this to a 1:9 registrar on-call rota from August 2025, subject to senior management team approval). When not on-call, the candidate will be expected to provide weekly elective activity which includes independent outpatient clinics and theatre activity. UHB represents the largest acute Trust in the country and as such has one of the largest and most ethnically diverse surgical patient and clinician cohorts in the UK. There is a well-established surgical and research team across all sites.
The post-holder will be required to lead and participate with audits to support the Colorectal and General Surgery service on request of the Surgical Education Lead.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Any basic medical qualification eligible for registration with the GMC
* MRCS
Experience
* Have a full-time hospital service experience as a Registrar or equivalent in the NHS
* General surgical experience, especially emergency general surgery
* Experience in audit and research
* Demonstration of keeping up to date with knowledge
* A high degree of competence in all basic medical skills coupled with evidence of manual dexterity necessary to perform technical procedures, namely surgical procedures as above

* A high degree of motivation and personal self-discipline.
* Ability to function both as a member and a potential leader of a multi-disciplinary clinical and research teams.
* Commitment to an understanding of the principles of research.
* An understanding of and commitment to research and evidence based practice in all aspects of medical care.
