Hays are working in partnership with an established Structural and Civil Engineering consultancy firm in Belfast, looking to hire a Structural Engineer. The company has offices in Belfast and Dublin and has a well-staffed in-house team of professional engineers and technicians. They have extensive experience in designing, modelling, and constructing steelwork, concrete, timber, and masonry structures, as well as roads, drainage, hard landscaping, storm attenuation, flood defences, and retaining walls. They also have expertise in investigating and appraising historic fabric, assessing stonework, brickwork, timber, and metal structural forms, and designing conservation remedial works and repairs. They have worked across various sectors, including Ecclesiastical, Education, Health, Hospitality, Industrial, Infrastructure, Public & Community, Residential, Retail, and Sport & Leisure.
Your new role
Main Responsibilities of a Structural Engineer:
1. Design of structures in reinforced concrete, structural steel, timber, and masonry.
2. Conceptual design, involving choice of appropriate materials and method of analysis.
3. Supervision and management of a team of engineers and technicians in detailed design, to set time budgets.
4. Preparation of project specifications, involving use of both standard specifications prepared by external agencies and in-house specifications.
5. Attendance at design team meetings, site meetings, and client consultations.
6. Organising Site Investigations by trial pit and borehole.
7. Preparation of piling and steelwork subcontracts.
8. Monitoring construction.
9. Inspection and reporting on structural defects in buildings.
10. Operation of procedures in accordance with the firm's quality system.
11. Prepare the designer's input to the Health & Safety plan for projects and issue to the Planning Supervisor.
12. Following the requisite training, fulfil the role of independent Planning Supervisor.
What you'll need to succeed
The ideal candidate for the Structural Engineer role should have a degree in Civil or Structural Engineering and 8-10 years of experience in the field, either Chartered or working towards Chartership. You should also have good knowledge and experience of undertaking structural calculations for various concrete structures, as well as demonstrable experience in undertaking the design of various civil engineering structures. The candidate should be confident in producing technical sketches to British Standards, fully versed with different software like AutoCAD, Revit, 3D Civil, etc. Strong report writing skills and data analysis capabilities are also desirable.
