University Hospitals Sussex (UHSussex) is seeking a passionate and experienced nursing professional to join our team as Head of Nursing for Safeguarding. This is a Band 8b role offering 37.5 hours per week, based trust-wide.
About the Role
As a pivotal member of the Safeguarding Senior Management Team, you will provide senior nursing leadership and management to deliver safe, high-quality safeguarding services. This role involves:
* Leading the safeguarding strategy and ensuring compliance with statutory regulations.
* Acting as the clinical governance lead for Dementia, Mental Health, and Autism safeguarding.
* Supporting education, training, and workforce development to build capacity and capability.
* Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to drive service improvement.

Main duties of the job
The Head of Nursing will be an integral member of the Safeguarding Senior Management Team supporting the Corporate Nursing Division in the delivery of key performance targets and the Safeguarding strategy. The post holder will provide proactive senior nursing leadership and management for Safeguarding for patients with Dementia, Learning Disabilities, Mental Health, and Autism.
You will also play a key role in providing assurance to the Trust Board and partners, chairing the Dementia, Mental Health, and Autism Operational Group, and contributing to strategic initiatives across the Integrated Care System (ICS).

Job responsibilities
The post holder will be responsible for implementing and monitoring quality governance arrangements that are in place within the Corporate Nursing Division. In conjunction with and on behalf of the Associate Director of Nursing for Safeguarding, the post holder will address CQC standards, risk management, review critical incidents, identify and review key clinical and service indicators/audit outcomes and implement information governance requirements.
The post holder will be responsible and accountable for the nursing budget(s) associated with their area(s) of responsibility.
They will be responsible for the performance and delivery of safe, high-quality safeguarding services within the designated area of responsibility and providing cross cover to other areas as required.
The post holder will be required to deputise for the Associate Director of Nursing for Safeguarding when required.
Person Specification
Essential
* Registered Nurse/ Mental Health Nurse / Learning Disability Nurse
* Educated to master's level/equivalent level qualification in relevant subject, or considerable experience of working at a similar level in specialist area.
* Teaching qualification or equivalent experience.
* Extensive experience of safeguarding experience with knowledge of specialist areas. Level 4 competence for Safeguarding
* Senior level experience of working within a dementia, learning disabilities, mental health, and autism
Desirable
* Robust understanding of clinical decision-making processes within health organisations and with partner organizations e.g., local Authority, acute and private providers, and the public
* Experience of presenting at a senior level Safeguarding Quarterly Board
