Job Introduction

We are looking to fill an 9 month attachment/fixed term contract as a Principal Technical Operator with the skills to act as a Studio director on our flagship regional news programme, South East Today. This is a multi-skilled role, so you will also be working on the varied shifts across our output.
South East Today is a half hour daily live news programme on BBC One, so the ideal candidate will have experience of directing live television in a news environment, of leading a multi skilled team under what can be tight time pressures.
Main Responsibilities
* Working as a Principle Technical Operator in our multi skilled Operations team. Included in this role will be the opportunity to work as the Studio director for our main regional news programme. You will also work on our other bulletins (both early in the morning and late in the evening), and cover other shifts such as acting as Technical Manager (involving OB comms and studio lighting), Sound Mixer, Editing or work on our multi-media hub.
* These shifts are covered 7 days a week, so you may also be working on occasional weekends and Bank Holidays.
* Multi-skilling is critical to the smooth running of the Operations department in BBC South East and you may have other skills that you bring to the team.
* The role is based at the BBC South East studios in Tunbridge Wells.
Are you the right candidate?
* The ideal candidate will have experience of directing live television in a news environment and of leading a multi skilled team under tight time pressures.
* You will need to be a good communicator, self-motivated and able to work with others or alone.
* You will be able to work calmly under pressure, and lead the team during live transmission to realise our editorial ambition.
* You will also be able to respond to problems in a fast and effective way – be that a technical solution to a problem or a reorganisation of priorities due to unexpected changes in the news agenda.
* Some experience of live news transmission systems will be an advantage – although you will be trained on our system as part of the placement.
* As a Principal Technical Operator you may be expected to take on extra responsibilities such as planning technical facilities to deliver the producer’s vision.
* You should have an aptitude and willingness to develop your own skills and learn new ones.
* You would also be actively involved in the training and development of others in the team as required and have an understanding of BBC Health & Safety policies.
